Reflective Analysis of Business Simulations: Coffee Shop Inc.

and
The Food Truck Challenge

Introduction

Simulations bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world

business difficulties by offering an immersive environment for applying
theoretical principles to real-world circumstances. I examine two different
simulations in this reflective essay: New Venture Simulation: The Food
Truck Challenge and Business Essentials Simulation: Coffee Shop Inc.
Opportunities to interact with operational difficulties, market dynamics,
and strategic decision-making were offered by both simulations. This
analysis attempts to offer insights into the circumstances, choices, and
results of the simulations as well as lessons learnt for upcoming business
contexts by incorporating theoretical topics from the course.

Simulation 1: Business Essentials Simulation: Coffee Shop Inc.

1. Simulation Selection and Scenario Overview

Because of its thorough depiction of business launch difficulties and the

interaction of economic, social, and competitive aspects, the Coffee Shop
Inc. simulation was selected. Establishing a coffee shop in a metropolis
with three distinct locations—the city center, the suburbs, and the
university campus—was the scenario. Despite the higher cost, I chose the
City Center site because I wanted to be very visible and have access to a
large consumer base. Navigating shifting market conditions and turning a
profit over a five-year period was the main goal.

The coffee business served 111,506 beverages in its first year, bringing in
$446,022, according to the computerized data. Although City Center's
strategic location among rivals and foot traffic supported the decision,
there were drawbacks, including the $50,000 yearly rent increase.
Differentiation was crucial because the majority of the City Center's rivals
were specialty cafés and foreign chains.

2. Challenge Encountered and Resolution

When a trade dispute resulted in tariffs on imported coffee beans, raising

prices, a major obstacle arose in Year 2. At the same time, foot traffic was
hampered by a city center regeneration project, which decreased
customer flow. In addition to pay increases, the cost of making one cup of
coffee increased by 20%. I changed the pricing approach to match
competitors' prices by lowering the drink price to $3.50 and stepping up
marketing to keep customers interested. Despite these efforts, daily sales
of drinks grew marginally from 305 to 317, and revenues fell to $405,121.
The combined effects of rising prices and declining demand were reflected
in this result.

The third year presented fresh difficulties. As the economy slowed,

consumer confidence declined even as the revitalization project was
finished. This was addressed by the decision to increase evening sales in
order to draw in a wider clientele, especially because reports suggested
suburbanites were increasingly spending more evening time in the city
center. Due to this choice, the number of beverages sold annually
increased to 106,426, demonstrating the significance of comprehending
shifting consumer behavior.

3. Application of Theoretical Concepts

Two key theories were applied:

 PESTLE Analysis: The evaluation of external elements, including

legal issues and economic developments, was guided by this
approach. For example, cost management changes were brought
about by the economic effects of the trade war. The importance of
economic monitoring was illustrated in Year 2 by the increase in
inflation and coffee bean prices. Decisions like cutting training
expenses in favor of promotions helped maintain operations by
foreseeing such shifts.

 Porter’s Competitive Forces: The marketplace context of the

simulation necessitated a strategic response because it included
both local eateries and international chains. Competitive positioning
theory guided the choice to differentiate through consistently high
standards and reasonable pricing. For example, competitors' price
increases brought about by higher costs offered a chance to draw in
price-conscious clients while preserving high levels of customer
satisfaction.

4. Real-World Insights and Conceptual Revelations

The simulation reaffirmed how crucial flexibility is to corporate operations.

For instance, the trade war brought supply chains' vulnerability to light,
highlighting the necessity of varied sourcing tactics. My knowledge of how
outside influence affects corporate performance has grown as a result of
the regeneration project, which demonstrated how urban policies affect
customer behavior. After the city center's revitalization was finished in
Year 3, evening sales started and consumer traffic surged, increasing
revenue to $399,096.

Furthermore, the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) demonstrated how

crucial employee satisfaction is to preserving operational effectiveness.
Due to static earnings in the face of rising expenditures, employee
satisfaction declined in Year 3, which led to a raise in salary to $24,500 by
Year 4. Customer satisfaction increased from 3 to 4 by the fifth year as a
result of this modification..

5. Future Approach and Strategies

With the knowledge I've gathered, I would tackle a comparable situation

by looking into ways to protect against supply chain risks and
implementing customer engagement programs to lessen interruptions.
Particularly beneficial would be tactics like targeted marketing, enhanced
staff training, and loyalty programs. The Year 4 choice to increase
nighttime sales, for example, was successful; the number of drinks sold
annually increased to 144,868, demonstrating the importance of market
segmentation. Stronger community involvement through regional
gatherings or partnerships may also improve brand loyalty.

Simulation 2: New Venture Simulation: The Food Truck Challenge

1. Simulation Selection and Scenario Overview

The Food Truck Challenge was chosen because it emphasizes market

research and entrepreneurship. In the simulation, a frozen yogurt food
truck was set up in Boomtown, a developing metropolis with a wide range
of demographics and business prospects. I selected the City Market
location because of its comparatively high foot traffic and demographic
mix of young couples and elderly folks. The main goal was to align offers
with market wants in order to create a viable company.

According to market data, frozen yogurt is becoming more and more

popular among adults and young adults. For example, frozen yogurt
outperformed ice cream and smoothies in 2017 with a rating of 4.1 among
adults and young adults. This influenced the choice to make frozen yogurt
the main offering. The location selection was further supported by City
Market's demographics, which included 29% young individuals, 26%
adults, and 37% elderly.

2. Challenge Encountered and Resolution

Finding the best menu item to serve in the face of varying tastes was a
crucial decision. According to market data, frozen yogurt was becoming
more and more popular, especially with consumers who were health-
conscious. Frozen yogurt was the perfect option at City Market, where a
sizable section of the population was made up of adults and older folks.
With just one ice cream shop and one smoothie stand in the region, there
was little local competition, which further reinforced this choice.
This decision was confirmed by revenue results, which showed that sales
had reached $8,391. However, difficulties in optimizing customer
involvement were found via foot traffic research. I addressed this by
introducing promotional offers and placing the truck in close proximity to
busy areas of the market. Additionally, sales were raised by taking
advantage of seasonal tendencies, such as providing discounts in the
summer.

3. Application of Theoretical Concepts

 Segmentation, Targeting, and Positioning (STP): When

choosing the City Market site and frozen yogurt offering, the STP
structure was essential. By focusing on young couples and health-
conscious individuals, the business successfully satisfied client
demands. For example, demographic data revealed that City Market
had 37% seniors and 26% adults, which is consistent with the
popularity of frozen yogurt.

 SWOT Analysis: To guide strategic choices, the following factors

were assessed: opportunities (developing health trends), threats
(competition), weaknesses (limited brand presence), and strengths
(unique product). For instance, the dearth of frozen yogurt vendors
in the Downtown and University districts indicated potential for
future growth. Furthermore, knowing customer preferences by age
group aided in improving product offerings.

4. Real-World Insights and Conceptual Revelations

The importance of customer profile and demographic information in

determining product and location was emphasized by the simulation.
Revenue results demonstrated how offerings may be aligned with market
trends to increase profitability. The simulation also demonstrated how
operational effectiveness affects customer happiness. For example,
prompt service and reliable quality enhanced customer satisfaction,
highlighting the importance of operational excellence.

My understanding of specialty marketing in fragmented markets has

grown as a result of the competition study. According to the report, frozen
yogurt was gaining market share in the food service sector, making up
32% of the total, while ice cream accounted for 45%. This pattern
emphasized how crucial it is to take advantage of new preferences.

5. Future Approach and Strategies

Implementing real-time feedback systems, such consumer surveys, to

improve products would be beneficial in future scenarios. Furthermore,
increasing awareness and consumer interaction may be possible by
utilizing social media for promotions and looking into joint ventures with
nearby events. Increasing market reach may also be achieved by
branching out to underserved areas like Downtown or the University.
Young adults, a crucial target category, made up 62% of the University's
population, according to demographic data, offering a substantial growth
possibility. Finally, offering healthier options or customisable toppings can
draw in more customers.

Conclusion

Both of the exercises offered beneficial chances to combine academic

understanding with real-world decision-making. While the Food Truck
Challenge focused on the significance of market alignment and
demographic data, the Coffee Shop Inc. simulation underscored the value
of flexibility and external environment analysis. All of these experiences
have improved my comprehension of business strategy, operational
difficulties, and customer-focused methods, giving me the tools I need to
succeed in my future managerial and entrepreneurial pursuits.
