Winter Olympics 2022

A lesson based on The Guardian Article and YouTube video.

TASK 1. Discuss the questions:

1. Do you follow the Winter Olympics? Why?

2. Do you know what games are in Winter Olympics Sports? Or how many?
3. Do you know how long it lasts?
4. Do you know anybody who participated in the Winter Olympics?

TASK 2. Now look at the Winter Olympic sports and read them out loud. Do you
know all of them? Which ones are new for you?

Miriam Pietruczuk HighHopes English School

TASK 2.1 Translate the sports below:

Saneczkarstwo

Bobsleje

Łyżwiarstwo szybkie

Łyżwiarstwo figurowe

Narciarstwo alpejskie

Narciarstwo dowolne

Narciarstwo biegowe

Biatlon (dwubój zimowy)

Skoki narciarskie

Snowboard

TASK 3. Try to figure out what is that sport by its definition:

1. ____________________________ is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and

rifle shooting. It is treated as a race, with contestants skiing through a cross-country trail
whose distance is divided into shooting rounds. The shooting rounds are not timed per
se, but depending on the competition, missed shots result in extra distance or time
being added to the contestant's total.

2. ____________________________ is a winter sport featured at the Winter Olympic Games

where a competitor or two-person team rides a flat sled while lying supine (face up)
and feet first. The sport is usually contested on a specially designed ice track that allows
gravity to increase the sled's speed. The winner normally completes the route with the
fastest overall time.

3. ____________________________ is a winter sliding sport in which a person rides a small sled,

known as a skeleton bobsled (or -sleigh), down a frozen track while lying face down and
head-first. The sport and the sled may have been named from the bony appearance of
the sled.

4. ____________________________ is a winter sport in which athletes compete in cross-country

skiing and ski jumping.

Miriam Pietruczuk HighHopes English School

5. ____________________________ is a team sport, played on ice, where two teams take it in
turns to slide stones made of granite towards a target – known as a House. It is an
Olympic and Paralympic winter sport with medal disciplines for Women's, Men's, Mixed
Doubles and mixed Wheelchair teams.

6. ____________________________ It’s a sport in which athletes compete in long-distance races

in the snow, wearing skis and using ski poles to propel them across the mostly flat
terrain. It has been on the Winter Olympics program since 1924 in Chamonix, France.

7. ____________________________ is an event in the Winter Olympic Games where a two- or

four-person team drives a specially designed sled down an ice track, with the winning
team completing the route with the fastest time.

TASK 4. Read two snippets from the article and try to figure out what a “quad” is.
Then you can proceed to the next exercise.

However, if there is a lasting requiem to these Games, it was soundtracked by Kirill Richter’s
enchanting melody In Memoriam, the music to which the 15-year-old skater Kamila Valieva
leapt and spun, performing the first quad in Olympic history during the team event.

She was not the only extraordinary story that night. The runner-up, Alexandra Trusova,
performed five quads but still lost to another Russian, Anna Shcherbakova. “I hate skating. I
hate it. I hate this sport,” she shouted afterwards. “I will never go out on the ice again!” It made
Tonya and Nancy look tame.

TASK 5. Watch the video and answer the questions and fill in the gaps:

1. What is a quad jump?

2. When and how did Nathan Chen set a new record?
3. What is the rotational speed when pulling off a quad?
4. James Richards told Scientific American in 2014 that he believes that quad may be the
_________________________ of what is possible in terms of figure skating jumps.
5. In ___________________________ you are landing with seven times your body weight.
6. Despite the fact that men have historically led the way on quadruple jumps, women
seem _______________________________ at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
7. But despite the one _________, she earned her team gold.
8. The expectation that the women who are winning medals will have, at a minimum, one
quad, is a little bit __________________
9. The first ______________________ a woman was in 1990 by Surya Bonaly.
10. She later stated that the quad for her was ______________ and that she saw it as a natural
progression from single, double, and triple jumps.

Miriam Pietruczuk HighHopes English School

TASK 6. Read the article and say if the sentences are true or false:

1. The Winter Olympics was held in Sochi.

2. Kamila Valieva performed the first quad in Olympic history during the team event.
3. She failed a drug test for the banned heart medication TMZ.
4. When she left the ice rink her coach Eteri Tutberidze immediately cheered her up.
5. They say Kamila must have acquired the drugs by herself.
6. Valieva will compete in the next Winter Olympics.
7. Mac Cobb who has been a part of every Olympic Winter Games said he has never
witnessed so many doping scandals before.
8. These Games will also linger in the memory because of the extraordinary closed-loop
system, which didn’t allow the athletes, officials and journalists any interaction with
mainland China.
9. More than 1.8m tests were taken during the Games.
10. China ended these Games second in the table with 15 medals, including nine golds.

TASK 7. Translate the words below (some of them are from the article and others
from task 3)

● trail- ● attempt-
● sled- ● spare a thought for-
● ski poles- ● lash out at sb-
● combine- ● fall apart-
