GUIDELINE FOR TEACHING ASSISTANT

1. Objectives of the guideline


This guideline aims at clarifying the responsibilities, behaviors, and requirements of a teaching
assistant. In other words, it helps explain the duties and regulations that a teaching assistant
should follow. It also helps enhance work performance and the interaction between a teaching
assistant and the students.

2. Responsibilities of teaching assistants


- Ensure that the criteria and regulations set by International University (IU), School of
Biomedical Engineering (BME), and the lecturer of the course are implemented in class.
- Help the lecturer prepare for the theory class or lab class if assigned. Find out if the lecturer
needs you to be present in class and what your role is. Follow the directions of the lecturer.
- Help prepare and grade the homework, assignments, lab reports, or other materials if assigned.
Strictly follow the grading rubric agreed or provided by the lecturer. Be careful to comprehend
the provided rubric and the grading scale. If you are unsure of any points in the rubric or how to
correctly grade an answer, consult with the lecturer. Repeated checks are preferable to ensure
accurate grading. Provide formal feedback. Return or provide all the required documents to the
lecturer afterwards.
- Help create and organize a channel for notification and communication with the students if
assigned, such as Blackboard or a Facebook group.
- Prioritize English when communicating with the students.
- Note down the problems or opinions of the students. Only provide instruction if you are certain
that your instruction is a correct approach. Otherwise, please discuss with the lecturer for an
appropriate solution.
- Protect confidential information and documents, such as answers to assignments or the student
grades.
- Participate in the training sessions and follow the instructions from the staff of the School of
BME.

3. Behaviors of teaching assistants


- Follow the policies, rules, standards, and any other instructions of IU, School of BME, and the
lecturer.
- Be on time.
- Treat the lecturer and students with respect. Avoid being arrogant and behaving as if you are
more important or more intelligent than the students.
- Try not to be too friendly or too demanding with the students.
- Treat all students equally.
- Act in a way that promotes the learning attitude of the students.
- When providing feedback for student performance, be sincere and courteous. Keep any
conflicts to a minimum.
- Be calm while handling different problems or arguments encountered in class. Emphasize to
the students that all the concerns will be considered. Seek the lecturer for appropriate resolutions
to deal with the situation.
- Pay attention to your words, especially on social media. Never criticize, mock, or insult any
individuals in public, including lecturers, staff, or any specific students. All the issues ought to
be resolved in a professional manner.
- If anything seems above your control, talk to the lecturer immediately before taking any action.
Any conflicts that develop between the students, or between the teaching assistant(s) and the
students, should be handled by the lecturer. Try to discuss and follow the lecturer’s instructions.

4. Requirements of teaching assistants


- The prospective teaching assistant should meet the criteria of IU, such as the overall GPA and
the course GPA.
- The prospective teaching assistant should have sufficient background and skills required for the
course. To fully understand the course's content or any changes from the previous semesters, feel
free to contact the lecturer.
- The prospective teaching assistant should have a high fluency in English use.

Short checklist to make sure you understand the key points:


 Respect the policies, rules, standards, and instructions set by the International University,
the School of Biomedical Engineering, and the lecturers.
 Ensure sufficient knowledge and skills required for the course.
 Fulfill your responsibilities, such as helping prepare the theory class and lab class,
instructing students with experiments or projects, and grading assignments or other materials.
 Maintain a polite and sincere attitude at all times.
 Immediately inform the lecturer of any issues and follow the instructions.

Thank you for dedicating your time, your mind, and your heart to improving the teaching quality
at the School of Biomedical Engineering. You are an important part of the education progress of
the students.
