Module -1

1. Define SHM and mention any two examples. Derive the differential equation for
SHM using Hooke’s law.
2. Applying Hooke’s law arrive at the equations for the effective spring constants of
Series and Parallel combinations of springs.
3. What are damped oscillations? Discuss the theory of damped oscillations. Represent
overdamping, critical damping and under damping by graph.
4. Discuss the theory of forced oscillations and hence discuss resonance.
5. A free particle is executing S.H.M in straight line with a period of 5 seconds after it
has crossed the equilibrium point, the velocity is found to be 0.7m/s. Find the
displacement at the end of 10 seconds, and also the amplitude of oscillation.
6. With a neat diagram, explain the construction and working of Reddy’s shock tube.
Mention the any three applications of shock waves.
7. Enumerate the properties and applications of shock waves.

Module-2

1. State Wein’s law and Rayleigh-Jeans law and mention their draw backs.
2. Discuss the spectral distribution of energy in the black body radiation spectrum and
hence explain Wien’s displacement law.
3. Starting from Planck’s quantum theory of radiation arrive at Wein’s law and
Rayleigh-Jean’s law.
4. State Heisenberg uncertainty Principle. Show that electron does not exist inside the
nucleus, using this principle.
5. Assuming time independent Schrodinger’s wave equation discuss the solution for a
particle in one dimensional potential well of infinite height and hence obtain the
normalized wave equation.
Or
Discuss the particle in a one dimensional potential well of infinite height, and obtain
energy eigen value and wave function.
Or
Discuss the motion of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional potential well of the
infinite height and of width ‘a’ and also examine the quantization of energy.
6. A particle having mass of 0.5MeV/c2 has a kinetic energy of 100 eV. Calculate the
de-Broglie wavelength, where c is the velocity of light.
7. The kinetic energy of an electron is equal to the energy of a photon with a wavelength
of 560 nm. Calculate the de Broglie wavelength of the electron.
8. A quantum particle confined to one dimensional box of width ‘a’ is in its first excited
state. What is the probability of finding the particle over an interval of ‘a/2’ marked
symmetrically at the center of the box.
9. The speed of electron is measured to within an uncertainty of 2 × 104 ms-1 in one
dimension. What is the minimum width required by the electron to be confined in an
atom?

Module-3

1. Obtain the expression for energy density using Einstein’s A and B Coefficients.
2. Define the terms population inversion and Meta stable state. Explain the construction
and working of semiconductor laser.
3. Identify the requisites of the CO2 LASER and Explain its construction and working
with the help of a neat sketch and band diagram.
4. Explain how laser finds application in eye surgery.
5. With neat diagram explain the working of Intensity based displacement sensor using
optical fiber.
6. Discuss the attenuation and various losses in optical fibers.
7. Define Modes of Propagation and RI Profile and Distinguish between the types of
optical fibers.
8. Derive the expression for numerical aperture of an optical fiber. Mention any two
merits and demerits of optical communication.
9. The ratio of population of two energy levels out of which upper one corresponds to a
metastable state is 1.059x 10-30 . Find the wavelength of light emitted at 330 K.
10. Estimate the attenuation in an optical fiber of length 500 m when a light signal of
power 100 mW emerges out of fiber with a power 90 mW.

Module-4

1. Mention any four assumptions of Drude-Lorentz model and discuss the success of
Quantum free electron theory.
2. Obtain expression for electrical conductivity in metals on quantum model or using the
quantum free electron theory of metals.
3. What is Hall effect? Obtain the expression for the Hall coefficient.
4. Derive Clausius-Mossotti equation.
5. Describe in brief the various types of polarization mechanisms.
6. Find the temperature at which there is 1% probability that a state with energy 0.5 eV
above the fermi energy is occupied.
7. Calculate the probability that an energy level at 0.2eV below Fermi level is occupied
at temperature 500K.

Module-5

1. Define nano-material and classify the nano-materials based on the dimensional


constraints.
2. Explain the construction and working of X-Ray diffractometer.
3. Explain in brief how crystal size is determined by Scherrer’s equation.
4. Describe the construction and working of Scanning Electron Microscope with the help
of a neat diagram.
5. With neat diagram, explain the principle, construction and working of Atomic Force
Microscope.
6. Mention the principle and applications of X-ray photoelectron spectroscope.
7. Illustrate the working of Transmission Electron Microscope.
8. With neat diagram, explain the principle, construction and working of X-ray
photoelectron spectroscope.
