FUNCTIONS
Relation is a collection of related numbers. Most often
the ordered pairs are described by an equation.

Function is a speci c kind of relation such that every

input has only one matching output.

Composite functions happens when functions are plugged

within another function.

DOMAIN AND RANGE
Domain is the set of appropriate inputs that a function
accepts.

Range is the set of possible output for the function with

the given domain.

Common reference domains:

1
f(x) = → g(x) ≠ 0
g(x) f(x) = g(x) → g(x) ≥ 0
f(x) = log[g(x)] → g(x) > 0

LIMITS AND CONTINUITY

A limit describes the value that a function approaches as
the input (or variable) approaches a certain value.
Mathematically, the limit of a function f(x) as x
approaches a value c is written as:

lim f(x) = L
x→c

This means that as x gets arbitrarily close to c , the

function f(x) gets arbitrarily close to L.
PREPARED BY: ENGR. JOEY A. DANDAN
ECE/EE REVIEW COORDINATOR

LIMITS AND CONTINUITY

One-sided limits: Examining the behavior as x approaches c
from the left (x → c −) or the right (x → c +).

A t wo-sided limit in calculus examines the behavior of a

function as the input approaches a particular value from
both directions - from the left and from the right. The t wo-
sided limit exists if and only if both the left-hand limit and
the. right-hand limit exist and are equal:

lim f(x) = lim+ f(x) = L

x→c − x→c

LIMITS AND CONTINUITY
In nite limits: Describing behavior as the function
approaches in nity or negative in nity.

Limits at in nity: Observing the behavior of a function

as the variable grows without bound.

ECE/EE REVIEW COORDINATOR

LIMITS AND CONTINUITY

A function is continuous at x = a if:

lim f(x) = f(a)

x→a

Continuity ensures there are no breaks, jumps, or holes

in the graph at x = a

PREPARED BY: ENGR. JOEY A. DANDAN

ECE/EE REVIEW COORDINATOR

LIMITS AND CONTINUITY

Removable discontinuity: A hole in the graph where the limit
exists, but the function is either unde ned or not equal to the limit.

Jump discontinuity: A sudden jump in the graph where the left-

hand and right-hand limits exist but are unequal.

In nite discontinuity: The function heads towards in nity or

negative in nity, often due to a vertical asymptote.

Oscillatory discontinuity: The function oscillates without settling

on a value as it approaches a point.

DERIVATIVES
In calculus, the derivative of a function measures how
the function s output value changes as its input value
changes. More precisely, it represents the rate of change
or the slope of the function at a given point.

Mathematically, the derivative of a function f(x) at a

point x = a is de ned as:
f(x) − f(a)
f′(a) = lim
x→a x−a
