About PDMS
Based in Karachi, Pakistan, PDMS is developing Urdu Software
products since 1986. The nationally acclaimed ‘Nastaleeq Nizami’ -
Urdu Desktop Publishing software has boosted tremendously the use of
computers in Pakistan by making them write beautifully in Nastaleeq
Script of Urdu language. More products include Urdu Computer
Nizam, Urdu 98, Urdu Mahir, Ruqqa-UrduEmail, QuranMajeedCD and
Imagine (Criminal Identification & Sketching System with East Asian
Facial Library). PDMS has also developed fonts for the regional
languages like Sindhi and Pushto besides designing a number of
Nastaleeq and Naskh fonts PDMS is also constantly engaged in
developing Internet websites and portals and has designed a number of
Urdu portals including urduseek.com, urdunews.net & cityislam.com.
The areas in which PDMS has technical expertise make it a unique
venture in Pakistan.

Setting Up
and click ‘Next’.

Installation
1. Run ‘Setup.exe’ provided in PDMS Jauhar CD.
2. Click ‘Next’ in welcome screen.

5. Click ‘Install’ in next screen.

3. Read & accept the license agreement and click ‘Next’.

6. Installation will start and following dialog box will appear

7. Select ‘Single User Mode / Server Mode’ and click OK.

NOTE: If you have single user license of PDMS Jauhar you

will select ‘Single User Mode / Server Mode’. For server
versions of PDMS Jauhar, ‘Client Mode’ is selected when NOTE: If this dialog box does not appear, right-click ‘PDMS

click OK button. In few minutes your product will be
registered. Skip to step 18.
12. Offline Registration: If you don’t have internet connection
then click ‘Register Offline’ button. Following screen will
appear:

Note down your serial number and product code.

Options’ from Control Panel. Select ‘Languages’

Settings for Windows XP

necessary files. System reboot may also be required.

3. Click ‘Add…’ button. Select ‘Urdu’ in Input

language field and ‘PDMS – Phonetic’ in
Keyboard layout/IME field. Click OK.

Following keyboard layouts are also included in

PDMS Jauhar that you can add using the same
procedure:
• PDMS – PakUrdu
• PDMS – NLA (National Language Authority)
• PDMS – Monotype

4. Click OK for Text Services dialog box.

5. Click OK for ‘Regional and Language Options’
control panel.

Settings for Windows 2000

1. Add ‘Arabic’ language support in Windows 2000

from ‘Regional Options’ available from
‘Start=>Settings=>Control Panel’. Make sure that
‘Arabic’ checkbox from language settings of the
system in ‘General’ tab is selected. Press ‘Apply’
button. You may be asked for Windows 2000
Installation CD to copy necessary files. System
reboot may also be required.

3. Then click add button to add a new keyboard

layout. Following dialog box will appear. Select
‘Urdu’ in Input Locale field and ‘PDMS Jauhar’ in
Keyboard layout/IME field. Click OK.

For adding Sindhi keyboard layout, click add

button again and select ‘Urdu’ in Input Locale
field and ‘Sindhi Phonetic’ in Keyboard
layout/IME field. Click OK.
2. After system reboot, run

Urdu numerals in Windows 2000 Online Keyboard
1. Goto ‘Regional Options’ control panel and goto An online keyboard is available from:
‘Numbers’ tab.
Windows XP: ‘Start=>All Programs=> Accessories=>
Accessibility=> On-Screen Keyboard’

Windows 2000: ‘Start=> Programs=> Accessories=>

Accessibility=> Online Keyboard’

You will have to change the font of the keyboard from

‘Font’ command of ‘Settings’ menu and select
‘PDMS_SindhiMansehra’.

Chapter 3: Typing Urdu in WordPad
Using PDMS Jauhar Start WordPad by selecting Programs=>Accessories=>WordPad.

PDMS Jauhar purple icon appears in the task tray of your computer’s
desktop. For Windows XP, click icon in the task tray. Following menu
will appear:

Indicates that PDMS Jauhar is currently active and running

properly.

Select ‘Urdu’ from above menu. If more than one keyboard layouts

Right clicking on PDMS Jauhar icon will show the following PDMS
Jauhar shortcut menu:
NOTE: If only one keyboard layout was added then above icon and
menu will not appear.

This menu has four item which are described below:

1. About PDMS Jauhar…: Shows information about PDMS

Jauhar
2. Configuration: PDMS Jauhar Configuration dialog box will
be displayed which is described in step 8 of installation
instructions.
3. Re-launch: This option will re-launch PDMS Jauhar.
4. Exit: This option will exit PDMS Jauhar.

Urdu in Microsoft Word

Select ‘_PDMS_Jauhar’ from the font menu in Wordpad and select a

larger point size like 48. Now you can type Urdu from your keyboard.
Type ‘n a t e l y q’ to type Nastaliq in Urdu.

To type Urdu in Microsoft Word

1. To have text begin from the right, click Right-to-Left on
the Formatting toolbar.
2. Select UR from language menu.
3. Select _PDMS_Jauhar font from font menu.

… Now you can type in Urdu.

Use columns in Urdu documents Slide shows/presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint
You can specify the direction of columns in an Urdu
document by selecting “Columns…” command from the “Format”
menu and then select right-to-left direction from the dialog box.

Use tables in Urdu documents

1. Place the insertion point in the table.
2. On the Table menu, click Table Properties, and then click the
Table tab.
3. Under Table direction, select the table direction you want.

3. Select _PDMS_Jauhar font from font menu.

… Now you can type in Urdu.

Urdu databases using Microsoft Access From “International” tab, you can also change the default
direction/alignment to left-to-right.

In MS Access you can change the default font and the default
direction for the database/datasheet for table views, etc.
To change the default font choose “Options” command from the
“Tools” menu and from the “Datasheet” tab select default font
to _PDMS_Jauhar.

Urdu spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel From “International” tab, you can also change the default
direction of the spreadsheet as well as change the view of the
sheet as right-to-left.

Urdu DTP using Microsoft Publisher

All features are similar as explained in Word section.

You can change the font of the spreadsheet by choosing
“Options” command from the “Tools” menu and from the Creating Urdu Websites
“General” tab select standard font to _PDMS_Jauhar.
You can create Urdu websites using Microsoft FrontPage or
other Website creation software. You will need license for
PDMS Nastaliq Embedded OpenType (EOT Font). Please

Importing Urdu text from other software
PDMS Jauhar CD comes with a text conversion utility
‘UrduConv’ which can be used to import Urdu text from other
programs like Urdu 98, InPage, etc. To convert InPage texts
follow the steps given below:

Copy & Paste Method:

1. Start InPage and open the file you want to convert
2. Select the text in InPage you want to convert
(Ctrl+A to select all text)
3. Start UrduConv from Start->All Programs-
>PDMS Jauhar->Urdu Conv
4. Click 'Convert Clipboard' button once
5. Start MS Word
6. Paste the text in MS Word
7. Select All and change the font to _PDMS_Jauhar
and change the paragraph direction to right-to-left

File Method:
1. Start InPage and open the file you want to convert
2. Select the text in InPage you want to convert
(Ctrl+A to select all text)
3. Choose 'Export...' from 'File' menu
4. Save the file as anyname.txt
5. Start UrduConv from Start->All Programs->
PDMS Jauhar ->Urdu Conv
6. Click 'Convert File' button
7. Select previously created anyname.txt file
8. A new file will be created with the
name 'anyname-Unicode.txt' in the same folder
9. Start MS Word
10. Open anyname-Unicode.txt
11. Select all and change the font to _PDMS_Jauhar
and change the paragraph direction to right-to-left.
