Title: Astrophotography Assignment

Introduction:

This assignment presents the process and outcome of my first attempt at astrophotography
using a smartphone. The aim was to capture a detailed night sky image and enhance it
through image stacking and post-processing techniques.

Equipment & Software:

● Device: Samsung Galaxy S22+

● Software Used: Lightroom Classic (LrC), Photoshop (Ps)
● Additional Tools: Smartphone tripod for stability

Methodology:

1. Image Capture:

○ Camera Mode: RAW mode (distinct from Pro mode) with automatic
astrophotography settings.
○ Exposure Time: 5 minutes per shot.
○ Number of Images: Three long-exposure images.
○ Setup: Mounted on a tripod to ensure stability and minimize vibrations.
2. Post-Processing Workflow:

○ Imported the RAW images into Lightroom Classic.

○ Made preliminary adjustments to exposure, contrast, and noise reduction.
○ Exported images to Photoshop for layering and stacking.
○ Layer masks and blending modes were used to enhance star details while
reducing background noise.
○ Final colour grading and sharpening were performed in Lightroom to bring out
the finer details.

Challenges Faced:

● This was my first attempt at astrophotography, image stacking, and using advanced
editing software.
● Learning the functionalities of LrC and Ps required substantial effort but proved
invaluable.
● Aligning layers and maintaining image quality during stacking posed initial difficulties.
Conclusion:

The assignment provided hands-on experience with astrophotography and post-processing.

Despite being a beginner, the final result showcased visible constellations and a clear night
sky, marking a successful first attempt. The project also enhanced my technical skills in
photography and digital editing.

Reflection:

Learning and executing this project from scratch was challenging yet rewarding. The process
not only deepened my understanding of astrophotography techniques but also improved my
proficiency with editing software.
