ME 444 Homework 4

Spring 2025 Due Monday, April 7th

1. Using Python code, solve the following. When vector W1 of the planar
four-bar stamping mechanism is rotated β=60 degree, a reaction force of
Fp2=(0,4500) N is applied due to the stamping event. Tables 1 and 2
include the dimensions and mass properties of the planar four-bar
stamping mechanism in the initial position (Figure a). Calculate the static
torque and forces generated in the stamping mechanism in the stamping
position (Figure b). Gravity is −9.81 m/s2. Solution is given in Table 3.

2. Using Python code, solve the following. Calculate the reaction forces
Fa0x, Fa0y, Fb0x, and Fb0y over a complete crank rotation range for the planar
four-bar mechanism in Tables 1 and 2 below. For this mechanism Fp1=(0,0)
N, initial angular velocity of crank is =1 rad/s and angular acceleration
=0 rad/s . Also, Tb0=0 and gravity is −9.81 m/s2.

4. A 15-tooth spur pinion has a diametrical pitch of 5 mm/tooth and 20◦
pressure angle, rotates at 600 rev/min, and drives a 60-tooth gear. The
drive transmits 25 hp. Construct a free-body diagram of each gear showing
upon it the tangential and radial components of the forces and their proper
directions. [ 10 Points]

5. Determine the reaction forces at the joints and the crank torque of the
slider-crank linkage in the posture shown. For the constant angular velocity
ω2 = 210 rad/s, the known kinematics are: α 3 = −7 670 rad/s2, AG3 =
−7820 + 4 876 ft/s2, and AG4 = −7 850 ft/s2. The weights and mass
moments of inertia of the links are w3 = 3.40 lb, w4 = 2.86 lb, IG2 = 0.352 in·
lb· s2, and IG3 = 0.108 in· lb· s2. [ 10 Points]

6. For the mechanism in the posture shown, the first- and second-order
kinematic coefficients of links 3 and 4 are = −0.125 rad/rad, = 1.299
m/rad, =0, and =0.094 m/rad2. The constant angular velocity of input
link 2, which rolls without slipping on the inclined plane, is ω 2 = 20 rad/s cw.
The free length of the spring is 3 m, the spring rate is k = 25 N/m, and the
damping constant of the viscous damper is C = 15 N·s/m. The masses and
mass moments of inertia of links 2 and 4 are m 2 = 7 kg, m4 = 4 kg, IG2 = 1.8
kg· m2, and IG4 = 22 kg· m2. The mass of link 3 is negligible compared to the
masses of links 2 and 4, and gravity is in the negative y direction.
Determine: (a) the first- and second-order kinematic coefficients of the
mass centers of links 2 and 4; (b) the equivalent mass moment of inertia;
and (c) the magnitude and direction of the torque acting on link 2. [ 10
