Different Social Networking Sites

The term social networking refers to the use of internet-based social media sites to stay connected with
friends, family, colleagues, customers, or clients. A social networking service, often known as a social
networking site, is an online platform that allows people to develop social networks or relationships
with others who have similar personal or professional interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life
connections.

The type and amount of features offered by social networking sites differ. They can use a variety of
modern information and communication tools on desktops and laptops, as well as mobile devices
like tablets and smartphones. This could include online photo/video/sharing and diary writing
(blogging). Developers and users sometimes regard online community services to be social-network
services, but in a larger sense, a social-network service usually delivers an individual-oriented
service, whereas online community services are centered on groups. Social networking sites, which
are generally defined as "websites that promote the construction of a network of connections in order
to exchange various forms of material online," give a space for interaction to extend beyond in-
person encounters. These computer-mediated interactions connect members of different networks
and may aid in the formation, maintenance, and development of new social and professional
relationships.

Users can share ideas, digital images and videos, postings, and tell others about online or real-world
activities and events with people in their social network using social networking sites. While in-
person social networking has existed since the dawn of civilization — for example, gathering in a
village market to discuss current events – the internet allows people to interact with others who
reside in various parts of the world (dependent on access to an internet connection to do so).
Members may be able to contact any other member, depending on the social media platform.
Members can also contact anyone they have a connection with, and then anyone that contact has a
connection with, and so on.

How many people use social media?

The most popular social networks are frequently available in numerous languages and allow users to
connect with friends or people from all over the world, regardless of geography, politics, or economics.
Social networking sites are predicted to have 3.96 billion users by 2022, with these numbers expected to
continue to rise as mobile device usage and mobile social networks gain popularity in previously
underserved countries.

Social networking sites include:

Facebook

Facebook is one of the most recognizable social media platforms in the world. With more than 2.89 billion
monthly active users, more than a third of the world’s population uses Facebook. Founded on February 4,
2004, Facebook has consistently evolved through the years to fit the needs of its users and attract new
ones. The company currently also owns four of the biggest social media platforms, all with over one billion
monthly active users each: Facebook (core platform), WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram.
Businesses can create their own pages, groups, and events. Facebook also offers targeted advertising
opportunities for those who want to increase visibility to specific consumers. Businesses can also use
Facebook Messenger to send personal messages to customers.

YouTube

YouTube is the original video social media platform that boasts a dominance in the market, holding
second place for monthly active users at 2 billion. The company was founded in 2005 and was eventually
bought by Google. YouTube has a strong user base across all age groups. Including the difficult-to-reach
65+ demographic and with 38% of US adults using the platform, it’s second only to Facebook. There are
even more who visit the site and watch videos without signing into their own account. YouTube covers all
genres from beauty, gaming, education to DIY home improvements. This is the platform for most brands
to invest in, with video being the growing medium for content marketing. Basically, any business that
wants to use video marketing can use YouTube to reach a wide audience. The site also provides
analytics, facilitates interaction between users, and lets you embed videos in other websites.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a popular mobile messaging app. You can use it to send images, texts, documents, audio,
and video content to another user individually or in groups. Launched in 2010, the company is now owned
by Facebook along with Instagram. WhatsApp now has more than 2 billion monthly active users. Small
businesses can use the app to easily communicate with customers and prospects on a personal level.

Instagram

Instagram is another social media channel with a heavy emphasis on visuals. The site launched in 2010
and was later purchased by Facebook. It has more than 1 billion monthly active users and is mainly a
mobile platform. Like Facebook, Instagram offers targeted advertising options to help business users
reach a specific user. Instagram also offers various posting options, including photos, videos, slideshows,
stories, and live streams.

TikTok

TikTok is relatively new to the world of social networks. However, it has already made a memorable mark
on the social media landscape. The app lets a user create short, creative videos. It already has more than
800 million monthly active users around the world. Businesses can use it to show off their creative side
and create viral content as part of their social media marketing

Snapchat
Snapchat is a mobile messaging social media platform. A user can share one-time content with friends or
post stories that go out to all that users followers. Released in 2011, the app quickly became popular,
especially with young consumers. It has since slowed a bit. However, there are still about 360 million
monthly users worldwide using this social media channel. Brands that market to young consumers can
set up business accounts and advertise on the app.

Reddit

Reddit is a social news and entertainment website with a plethora of sub-communities devoted to a
variety of topics. To connect with other users, a registered user can upload content and comment on
topics. Since its inception in 2005, the site has grown to a monthly active user base of 430 million people.
Marketers aren't huge fans of Reddit. However, it has a large number of active, targeted communities,
making it a viable option for sites looking to expand their audience. For those interested in networking or
learning, there are also business-related subreddits.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a mix of a social media platform and a search engine. It is made up of digital bulletin boards
on which users can save products, project ideas, and inspirational images. It's a great location for
businesses to showcase product photographs, DIY ideas, recipes, and distinctive visuals. You may also
make your site's content "pinnable" by incorporating pin-it buttons that allow visitors to share your material
to their boards. Since its inception in 2010, Pinterest has grown to over 400 million monthly active users.

Twitter

Twitter sprang to prominence as a microblogging platform that only allowed users to submit text
messages of up to 140 characters. Since its inception in 2006, the character limit has been increased,
and users can now contribute other media such as images and videos. It isn't as popular as Facebook,
with only roughly 330 million monthly active users. However, it is still commonly used by ordinary people.
It can also be a useful site for interaction, such as participating in Twitter chats related to your industry or
responding to customers with customer service questions

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the most popular professional networking social media platform. Over 700 million people have
signed up for the platform, with about 300 million of them using it each month. LinkedIn, which was
founded in 2003, allows users to upload resumes, network with people in their sector, and even publish
and answer to job postings. LinkedIn is particularly effective for B2B companies in terms of marketing. It
also has alternatives for sponsored adverts and content creation.
