The document outlines corrections to the CPWD Specifications 2019 regarding energy-efficient buildings, specifically focusing on thermal transmittance and the use of cross-linked polyethylene foam (XLPE) as insulation material. It details the physical properties, installation procedures, and U-value requirements for wall assemblies using XLPE, along with sampling, testing, and measurement guidelines. Additionally, it provides tables for U-factor requirements and combinations of masonry materials with XLPE insulation.

Sub: Correction Slip no. 25 of CPWD Specifications 2019 under SH: (27) Energy
efficient buildings and techniques.

The following corrections/modifications may be made in CPWD Specifications 2019 under

SH: 27 Energy efficient buildings and techniques.

Thermal Transmittance (U) (in W/m'?K): Thermal transmission through unit area of the
given building unit divided by the temperature difference between the air or other fluid on
either side of the building unit in steady state conditions and it is a measure of preventing
heal transfer by the insulation material. A lower U-Value of material indicales better
insulation, as it means the material can resist the heat flow more effeclively.

27.1 With Cross linked polyethylene foam (XLPE)

27.1.1 Material: Cross-linked polyethylene foam (XLPE) is a closed-cell foam characterized

by a compact feel and resistance to water. lt has many of the properties of polyethylene
foam and fulfils the following requirements.
27 .1.1 The XLPE material should comply the following physical properties as under:

SH'.27.2 Energy efficiency of roof assembly using under deck insulation

R-Value, or thermal resistance value, is a measure of preventing heat transfer by the

insulation material. A higher R-Value of material indicates better insulation, as it means the
material can resist the flow heat more effectively. This value is used to compare insulation
materials and helps in determining the right insulation for a particular roof application and
climate conditions. The goal is to select insulation with an appropriate R-Value to maintain
comfort and energy efficiency in buildings.

27.3 lnsulated Glazed Units

(lGUs) in the vision panels

a(,\L 'vo7
27.3.1 Insulated glass unit are two or more panels of glass with a layer of air or inert gas
namely argon or krypton filled in space between the panels. The two panels of glass are
further separated by an aluminium spacer that is either mill-finished or painted /anodised in
different colours or finishes. A desiccant which might be silica gel or zeolite is used inside
the spacer bar so as to absorb any moisture that may be initially present in between the
glass panes. A primary sealant i.e. two part polysulphide based sealant (1S12'l l8) or
polyisobutylene (PlB) is used to fix the spacer bar to the inside of the glass panels while a
secondary sealant shall be Neutral-cure silicone, polysulphide or polyurethane is used on
the outside to provide structural integrity to the unit and create an airtight seal along the
continuous sides of the unit.

27.3.2 Flat glass: it is a general term covering sheet glass, float glass and various forms of
rolled and plate glass in which shape of the glass is flat transparent, clear or tinted soda-
lime silicate glass having parallel and polished surfaces obtained by casting and floatation
on a metal bath, shall be provided as per lS: 2835-1998. The thermally toughened glass
shall conform to the requirements of lS 2553 (Part 1): 1990 and marked toughened as per
requirement of lS: 17346.

27.3.3 Reflective Glass: lt is a glass with reflective coating which uses the principle of
increasing the direct refleclion to maximize solar energy attenuation. ln comparison with
clear glass, its absorption of solar energy is also increased. ln comparison with float glass
surface, these reflecting coatings (due to their composition) exhibit lower level of emissivity
which improves their U-value.

27.3.4 Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): The ratio of the solar heat gain entering the
space through the fenestration area to the incident solar radiation. Solar heat gain includes
directly transmitted solar heat and absorbed solar radiation, which is then reradiated,
conducted, or convected into the space.

27.3.5 Shading Coefficient: The ratio of the rate of solar heat gain through a specific unit
assembly of glass to the solar heat gain through a single pane of 3 mm clear glass in the
same environment. shading coefficient values of s 0.25 to 0.5 are preferred for reducing
solar heat gain in Hot and Humid or composite climates.

27.3.6 Visible Light Transmifted (vLT) : lt is the measure of percent of visible light
transmitted through glass pane which depend on type of body substrate and coating done
on glass.

27.3.7 Thermal Transmittance (U) :Thermal transmission through unit area of the given
building unit divided by the temperature difference between the air or other fluid on either
side of the building unit in steady state conditions. lt is also called as u-value. lts unit is
W/m2K.

27.3,8 lndividual toughened panes of glass of the IGU shall conform nominal thickness and
