Dynamic Reinforcement and Unsupervised Learning for Novel Attack Detection in

Cloud Environments

As cloud computing adoption continues to expand, cyber threats targeting these

environments have become increasingly sophisticated. Traditional security approaches
struggle to detect novel and adaptive attacks, necessitating the use of advanced machine
learning techniques. This paper explores the application of dynamic reinforcement learning
(RL) and unsupervised learning for real-time detection of previously unseen cyber threats in
cloud infrastructures.

The paper begins by analyzing the evolving threat landscape in cloud environments,
emphasizing attacks such as zero-day exploits, advanced persistent threats (APTs), and
insider attacks. It highlights the limitations of signature-based and rule-based security
mechanisms in identifying novel threats. To address these challenges, the paper introduces a
hybrid AI-driven approach leveraging reinforcement learning and unsupervised learning to
detect and mitigate emerging cyber threats.

Reinforcement learning enables adaptive threat detection by training agents to

recognize and respond to evolving attack patterns. By continuously interacting with cloud
network environments, RL-based models refine their policies to identify malicious activities
dynamically. Complementing RL, unsupervised learning techniques, such as clustering and
anomaly detection, identify deviations from normal behavior without requiring labeled attack
data. This dual approach enhances threat detection accuracy while reducing reliance on
predefined attack signatures.

The paper further discusses key implementation strategies, including feature

extraction from network traffic, integration with cloud-native security frameworks, and real-
time decision-making for automated threat response. It also addresses challenges such as
computational overhead, data privacy concerns, and adversarial attacks against AI-driven
security mechanisms.

In conclusion, this paper highlights the potential of combining reinforcement and

unsupervised learning to improve cloud security by enabling proactive detection of novel
attacks. By leveraging AI-driven adaptive learning, cloud environments can enhance
resilience against emerging cyber threats. Future research should focus on optimizing model
efficiency, ensuring robustness against adversarial manipulation, and developing standardized
frameworks for AI-driven cloud security.
