Ans: What the poet means to say is that we should stop all our activities for a few moments and do
quiet introspection. Most of the ills and troubles of the world are caused because of our rush and
hurry. Keeping still will give us the necessary respite for peace. It will help us to restart our activities
in a better and purposeful manner.

Ans: The poet does not advocate total inactivity and death. Actually, what he has said is centred
around life that can be made better if we take time off for quiet introspection.

Ans: The 'sadness' that the poet refers to in the poem is the sadness of never understanding
ourselves. Man is so caught up in his busy activities that he fails to understand himself. Sadness is
formed out of his own thinking and actions. Because of this, he is always threatening himself with
death and destruction. This sadness can be overcome only when we give ourselves time for quiet
introspection.
