PT 11 - Medical Terminologies

The document provides an overview of medical terminologies related to anatomical planes, body regions, and movement terms. It defines key anatomical terms such as anterior, posterior, and superior, and describes various movements like flexion, abduction, and rotation. Additionally, it distinguishes between osteokinematics and arthrokinematics in relation to joint movements.

PT 11 Lecture Notes on

Medical Terminologies

Sagittal plane - left and right division of the body

Transverse plane - division of upper and lower extremities

Fundamental plane - posterior and anterior division of the
body

Anatomical Term Area of the body it relates to

Anterior front surface of the body or structure

Posterior back surface of the body or structure

Deep further from the surface

Superficial near the surface

Internal nearer the inside

External nearer the outside

Lateral away from the midline

Medial towards the midline

Superior situated above or towards the upper part

Inferior situated below or towards the lower part

Proximal nearest to the point of reference

Distal furthest away from the point of reference

Ipsilateral same side of the reference point

Contralateral opposite side of the reference point

Supine lying face up in a horizontal position

Prone lying face down in a horizontal position

The anatomical regions of the body - refers to a certain area of the body. The body is
divided into:
- the head and neck
- the trunk
- the upper limbs (arms)
- the lower limbs (legs)
Osteokinematics - deals with the relationship of the movement of bones around a joint
axis (e.g., humerus moving on scapula).

Arthrokinematics - deals with the relationship of joint surface movement (humeral

head’s movement within glenoid fossa of scapula).

Flexion - the bending movement of one

bone on another
- causing a decrease in the joint
angle
Palmar flexion - flexion at the wrist

Plantar flexion - flexion at the ankle

Hyperextension - continuation of extension beyond

the anatomical position

Dorsiflexion - extension at both wrist and ankle

joints

Abduction - movement away from midline of

the body

Adduction - movement towards the midline of

the body

Horizontal Abduction - shoulder joint is flexed to 90

degrees then abducted

Horizontal Adduction - shoulder is adducted to

90-degrees position

Radial deviation - hand moves laterally, towards the

thumb side in anatomical position

Ulnar deviation - hand moves medially, towards the

little finger side at the wrist in
anatomical position
Lateral flexion - or lateral bending, where the
trunk moves sideways

Circumduction - movement that describes a circular

pattern
- it is combined with the four joint
motions:
● Flexion
● Abduction
● Extension
● Adduction

Rotation - a motion where the joint is turned

around the axis

Supination - faces the palm of the hand forward

or anteriorly

Pronation - the palm of the hand is facing

posteriorly or backward

Inversion - moving the sole of the foot inward

at the ankle

Eversion - moving the sole of the foot

outwards
