Create and Publish Power BI

reports

1. Create reports using Power BI


Desktop
Step 1: Install Power BI Desktop
1. Download Power BI Desktop: Go to the Power BI website and download the
desktop application.
2. Install Power BI Desktop: Follow the installation instructions.

Step 2: Connect Power BI to PostgreSQL


1. Open Power BI Desktop: Launch the application.
2. Get Data:
o Click on the "Home" tab, then select "Get Data".
3. Select PostgreSQL Database:
o In the "Get Data" window, choose "PostgreSQL database" and click
"Connect".
4. Enter Connection Details:
o Server: Enter the server address.
o Database: Enter the name of your database.
5. Authentication:
o Select the appropriate authentication method (Unencrypted and None).
o Enter PostgreSQL username and password, then click "Connect".

Step 3: Load Data into Power BI


1. Navigator Window: After connecting, a Navigator window will appear showing
your database tables.
2. Select Your Table: Check the box next to the table you want to use for the
report.
3. Load Data: Click the "Load" button to import the data into Power BI.

Step 4: Create a Bar Chart


1. Select Bar Chart Visual:
o In the "Visualizations" pane, click on the bar chart icon to add a bar chart
to your report canvas.
2. Add Data to the Chart:
o From the "Fields" pane, drag the category field to the "Axis" area of the
bar chart.
o Drag the value field to the "Values" area of the bar chart.
3. Customize the Chart:
o You can customize the chart's appearance by using the "Format" pane,
where you can change colors, labels, and titles.

Step 5: Save and Publish Your Report


1. Save Your Report: Click on "File" > "Save" to save your Power BI report.
2. Publish Your Report:
o If you want to share your report, click on "Publish" from the Home tab. You
will need a Power BI account to publish to the Power BI service.

Step 6: Schedule Data Refresh (Optional)


1. Set Up Refresh Schedule: If you publish your report to the Power BI service,
you can set up a data refresh schedule to keep your report updated.

2. Setup connection and standard

Pre-requisite: Standard Gateway must be installed, if not please request


Power BI Admin team.

1. From the page header in the Power BI service, select


the Settings icon, and then select Manage connections and
gateways.
2. Select New at the top of the screen to add a new data source.

3. On the New connection screen, select On-premises, provide


the Gateway cluster name you want to create the connection
on, provide a Connection name, and select the Data Source
Type. For this example, choose PostgreSQL.

4. Enter information about the data source. For PostgreSQL, provide


the Server and Database.
Note

To use the data source for Power BI reports and dashboards, the
server and database names must match between Power BI
Desktop and the data source you add to the gateway.

5. Select an Authentication method to use when connecting to the


data source: Basic. Enter the credentials for your data source.

6. Under General

1. Encrypted connection: Not encrypted

2. Privacy Level: None

7. Select Create. Under Settings, you see Created new


connection if the process succeeds. You can check the newly
created connection under Connections.
