Third Grading Period

NOTES in SCIENCE 2
Academic Year 2024-2025

ANIMALS AND THEIR BODY PARTS

• Animals have different parts. They use their body parts

to move, get food, and protect themselves.

• They move in different ways. They use some parts of

their bodies like legs, fins, and wings to move.

• Animals need food in order to survive. They use some body parts
like teeth, trunk, and proboscis, for getting food.

• They protect themselves too, from things that can harm them. They have
to use their special body parts like horns, shells and scales against the predators.

On pages 119-124 of your textbook, Science: A Field of Wonder, you will learn more about
the different body parts and their functions.

Here are some of the vocabulary words that you need to know.
• Some animals, like frogs, have strong hind legs used for hopping and jumping.

*Hind – at the back or near the back

• Fishes, octopuses, and squids swim in the water. Fishes swim using their fins. Squid
using their tentacles.
*Tentacles – are long and thin body parts attached to the head or
mouth of an animal.

• Snakes slither, while earthworms crawl on land. They use their whole bodies to
move from one place to another.
*Slither means to glide or slide.

• Insects use small legs and proboscis for getting food. Butterflies and bees use
their proboscis to get food from flowers.
*Proboscis is a long thin tube used by insects to get food.
WHERE ANIMALS LIVE

❖ HABITAT – is an animal’s natural home or shelter. It protects animals from bad weather.
It also protects them from too much heat or cold and from other harmful animals. Some
animals build their own homes, while others do not.

❖ Some animals live on land, others live in water and some animals can live both on land
and in water.

❖ Let’s learn where different animals live

Animals Place where they live

Zebras, lions, horses, cows/cattles,

monkeys, chickens, kangaroos, pandas
and deer live on land only

Animals like dolphins, octopus, fish,

sharks, jellyfish, seahorse, starfish and
other sea creatures live in the water.

Other animals like frogs, turtles, crabs,

and alligators can live both on land
and in water. .

• Birds build their nests on branches of trees, other birds build nests on the ground while
others stay on hollows of trees.
• Horses and cows live in yards and stables and pigs in pigpens.
• Dogs have doghouses built by their owner/humans.
Let’s Remember This:

✓ Just like humans, animals have different body parts. These parts help them to move,
get food, and protect themselves.
✓ Animals live in different places.
✓ Animals differ in many ways; they differ in size, body parts, movements, in food they
eat, and in places where they live.
✓ We should take care of animals as well as the places where they live so they will not
be endangered.
✓ Animals provide us with many benefits that are very important for our survival. They
need to be loved and protected so, let’s take good care of them.

PARTS OF A PLANT

❖ There are three main parts of a plant namely: the roots, stems and leaves but when the
plants mature, it bears flowers which develop into fruits and seeds.

Parts Functions / Uses

→ It holds the plant to the ground.

→ It absorbs water and nutrients from the soil.
→ It prevents soil erosion.
→ Some roots can be eaten.
examples:

→ It holds the upper part of the plant and

supports the leaves.
→ It carries water and nutrients to the different
parts of the plant.
• The trunk is the stem of a tree.
• The branches are the smaller stems arising
from the trunk.
• Trees have tall, thick, woody stems.
• Shrubs have thinner stems than trees.
They are often short and bushy (very thick
and full).

→ Some stems can be eaten.

examples:
→ Some stems are used to make buildings
materials. Logs are used to build walls and
flooring.
→ Also, stems are burned to make charcoal
which is used for cooking food.

→ Often, it has a green color, but it can also

have colors, such as yellow, red, and orange.
→ It catches the sunlight and uses it to make
food for the plant.

• Photosynthesis is the process of making

food for the plants.

(During photosynthesis, a plant traps energy from sunlight

with its LEAVES. It also takes up water from its roots and
carbon dioxide from the air. The plant uses the Sun’s
energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into a
sugary substance called glucose. The plant uses the
glucose as a food to help it stay alive and grow.)

→ Like stems and roots, some leaves can also

be eaten.
examples:

→ Leaves can be used as medicine.

Oregano Aloe Vera Guava

→ Leaves can also be used to make different
kinds of clothing.
ex:
piña cloth for barong Tagalog

→ They are the colorful parts of a plant.

→ They sometimes make seeds that grow into
new plants.
→ Some flowers with strong fragrances are used
for making perfumes.

→ They vary in color, size, and shape.

→ Also, they contain seeds.
• Fruits are food for all living organisms but
there are fruits that are not edible for
humans.
→ Some fruits can also be used as materials for
clothing.
ex:
cotton plants made into cotton towels

→ It comes in different shapes and sizes.

→ They contain baby plants that will someday
grow into new plants.

TAKING CARE OF PLANTS

Like animals, plants are important living things. They are very useful because they provide us
everything we need – clean air, food, clothing, medicine, and many others.

Like people and animals, plants need care. The following are needs of a plant to grow well.

Sunlight and air

Place your plant where there is enough sunlight and air for
the leaves to make its own food.

Soil
Grow your plant in a fertile soil. This soil has minerals that
your plant needs.
Water
Give your plant enough water.

Fertilizers
Use natural fertilizers to help your plant grow healthy.
Decayed plants and animals, too, can be used as fertilizer
to help the growth of the plants.

*fertilizer – a material added to the soil to improve plant growth.

Show care for the plant by watering, weeding and

pruning.

*WEEDS are wild plants that prevent plants from growing properly. They
take away water and minerals from the plants, that’s why they have to
be removed. This process is what we call “weeding”.

*Pruning means to cut away dead or overgrown branches or stems

❖ Like humans and animals, plants breathe in air through their stomata.
Stomata are tiny openings in the leaves.

Let’s Remember This:

✓ Plants are important to the environment and to all living organisms because they serve
many uses.
✓ Plants have different parts and each part has its own use – food, building materials,
clothing materials, and medicines among others.
✓ Plants need enough water, air, sunlight, fertile soil, and care.
✓ We are stewards of God’s creation. Let us continue planting and caring for plants.
