Question No. 37 to 39 are case-based/data -based questions with 2
to 3 short sub-parts.
Internal choice is provided in one of these sub-parts.
37 Chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances, the reactants, are 4
converted to one or more different substances, the products.
Chemical reactions are all around us, from the metabolism of food in our
body to the light we get from the sun is also due to chemical reactions. Chemical reactions
are integral in different industries and our daily lives. They are happening in our general
surroundings; for example, rusting of iron, fermentation of wine, and so on.
38 The small intestine is a part of the alimentary canal which receives the secretions of 4
accessory organs for digestion of food. The food coming from the stomach is acidic
and has to be made alkaline for the enzymes to act. A juice from the liver accomplishes this
in addition to acting on fats. Fats are present in the intestine in the form of large globules
which makes it difficult for enzymes to act on them. Salts present in the juice break them
down into smaller globules increasing the efficiency of enzyme action.
(a) How is the food coming from the stomach made alkaline?
(b) In the small intestine proteins are decomposed into which form?
(c) Where does the digestion of food starts in human digestive system? Name the
enzyme/s.
OR
(c) Which two accessory glands release their secretions into the small intestine for the
digestion of food?
39 A figure given below shows real and apparent depth of a fish in a pond. Real Depth is actual 4
distance of an object beneath the surface, as would be measured by submerging a perfect
ruler along with it.
Apparent depth in a medium is the depth of an object in a denser medium as seen from the
rarer medium. Its value is smaller than the real depth. The refractive index of the water with
respect to air can be calculated using the formula.
(a) What is the reason because of which the image formation takes place at apparent
position?
(b) The depth of the pond is 10 m. Observer sees the fish obliquely at the depth of 7 m from
the surface of the pond. What can be the actual position of the fish from the surface of
the pond?
(c) Apparent depth of the fish is 6 m. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, calculate the real
depth of the fish.
OR
(c) A fisherman throws a hook to catch the fish at a point slightly below the apparent position
of the fish. Why?
