1. Introduction
✓ Wind energy is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy sources
worldwide.
✓ Wind turbines harness the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it
into electrical power. The efficiency and functionality of a wind turbine
depend on its structural and mechanical components.
✓ These complex machines consist of numerous components working in
harmony to maximize efficiency and reliability.
2. Theory of Operation
a) Wind Capturing: Wind flows over the blades, creating lift (similar to
how an airplane wing works) and causing the rotor to spin.
b) Mechanical Energy Conversion: The rotor's rotation is transferred to
the gearbox through the main shaft.
c) Speed Increase: The gearbox increases the rotational speed from the
rotor to the generator. For example, if the rotor turns at 15 RPM, the
gearbox might increase this to 1,500 RPM suitable for the generator.
d) Electricity Generation: The generator, powered by the high-speed
rotation from the gearbox, converts mechanical energy into electrical
energy.
e) Electricity Transmission: The electrical energy produced is transmitted
to a substation, where it is converted to the correct voltage and
frequency for distribution to the power grid.
3. Main components and its functions
a) Rotor Blades
• These are aerodynamically designed airfoils that capture the wind's
kinetic energy.
• Their shape and pitch are optimized to maximize lift and minimize
drag.
➢ Function: - They rotate, transferring the wind's energy to the rotor hub
by capturing the kinetic energy of the wind and
convert it into rotational mechanical energy.
b) Hub
• This is the central part of the rotor, where the
blades are attached.
➢ Function: - It connects the blades to the low-
speed shaft.
It allows for pitch control, enabling the blades to
rotate and adjust their angle.
c) Nacelle
• Positioned at the top of the tower, the nacelle
acts as the central unit where energy conversion takes place. It also
contains cooling systems to regulate the temperature of internal
components.
• This is the housing located on top of the tower that contains the
essential components of the turbine.
➢ Function: -
It protects the internal machinery from the elements including the
gearbox, generator, and control systems.
d) Gearbox
• As wind turbine blades rotate slowly, the gearbox amplifies this speed
to ensure efficient power generation.
• Some turbines use direct-drive systems that eliminate the need for a
gearbox.
➢ Function:
The gearbox increases the
rotational speed from the rotor
shaft (low-speed shaft) to the
generator's required speed (higher
speed)
e) Generator
• Most wind turbines use
synchronous or asynchronous generators. The electrical energy
produced is then transmitted to the grid or used locally.
➢ Function:
The generator converts mechanical energy from the rotating shaft into
electrical energy.
f) Yaw System
• Controlled by sensors and motors, the yaw system
ensures that the wind turbine remains aligned with
changing wind directions.
➢ Function:
The yaw system orients the nacelle and rotor blades to
face the direction of the wind for optimal energy capture.
j) Brake System
• Wind turbines use mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical braking systems
to slow down or completely stop the rotation of the blades when
necessary.
➢ Function:
The brake system is used to stop the rotor in the event of emergencies or
maintenance.
k) Tower:
• Wind turbine towers are usually made of steel or concrete and vary in
height depending on the wind conditions of the installation site. Taller
towers allow turbines to access higher wind speeds, increasing energy
output.
• Supports the nacelle and rotor at a height that maximizes wind
capture.
• Its height is crucial, as wind speeds increase with altitude.
• It provides a stable structure to withstand wind loads.
• Contains cabling that transfers the produced electricity down to the
ground.
4. Conclusion
