Design of connections in steel structures
1. Define Rivets. State the different types of rivets.

4. Write short notes on
(a) Failure of riveted joint.
(b) Efficiency of riveted joint.
(c) Assumptions in design of riveted joint.
5. Distinguish between a lap and Butt Joints.
6. Differentiate between welded and riveted connections.
7. Determine the load which can be transmitted per pitch length of a double cover butt joint
connected by 22 mm diameter shop rivets at 9 cm pitch. The thickness of main plates and
cover plates is 16 mm and 10 mm respectively. The allowable tensile strength is equal to 150
MPa. Also calculate the efficiency of the joint.
8. A double riveted double cover butt joint is used to connect plates 12 mm thick. If 22 mm
diameter power driven shop rivets are used at 70 mm, determine the strength of joint and its
efficiency. Take at= 150 MPa.
9. Find out the number of power driven field rivets required to connect a tension member in a
roof truss to a gusset plate 6 mm thick. The tension member is a flat of size 75 mm x 6 mm
and is subjected to a pull of 48 kN.
10. Calculate the size of fillet weld required for joint shown in fig. to carry an axial force of 200
kN.

12. Determine the rivet value of 18 mm diameter rivets connecting 10 mm plate and is in (i)
Single shear and (ii) Double shear. The permissible stresses for rivets in shear and bearing
are 80 MPa and 250 MPa respectively and for plate in bearing is 250 MPa.

6. A beam of effective span 5.00 m is to carry a transverse loading of intensity 50 kN/m 2, all
inclusive. Assume that the compression flange is fully restrained. Assuming your own
stresses, check the suitability of the section ISMB 400 having t = 8.9mm and I =2.05 x 10
mm4.
7. A beam supports a wooden flooring consisting of wooden joists spaced at 0.6 m c/c giving a
load 12 kN each. The span of the beam is 6 m. Design the beam.

9. State the procedure for the design of a built-up section.
10. A compound beam is formed of ISMB 450 @ 72.4 kgf/m with a cover plate, 40 cm x 2.5 cm
at top and bottom of beam. Calculate the safe UDL the beam can carry, if the effective span
of beam is 10 m.
11. An ISMB 350 along with two cover plates 300 × 10mm each connected to flange and used as
simple supported beam over a span of 6 m. Determine maximum safe udl carried by beam.
12. Design a girder of 6 m span, simply supported at its ends has to carry a total load of 150
kN/m. The materials available for its fabrication are ISLB 500, steel plates of 12 mm
thickness of different width and 22 mm diameter rivets. Check the beam for bending stess
and shear stress. The beam is fully restrained laterally for ISLB 500, Ixx=38579 x 10 mm4,
tf,= 14.1 mm and tw = 9.2 and bf= 180 mm, g= 100 mm. Usual permissible stresses may be
assumed.

UNIT 3
Design of RC flanged beam
4. Design a reinforced concrete slab for a room with clear span 4m x 6m. the slab is supported
on walls of 300mm width. LL on slab is 4KN/m and floor finish is 1.5KN/m. Corners of slab
are free to lift. Use LSM and IS code method, use M20 & Fe415.
5. A verandah 2.8m wide is supported on 230 mm thick side walls. It carries a superimposed
load of 3.5 KNm including floor finish. Design a suitable slab using M20 concrete and
Fe415. Take modification factor 1.4.
6. Design a simply supported R.C.C slab for a hall 3mx8m(inner dimension) with 230 mm thick
wall. Assume live load of 4 kN/m and finish 1 kN/m. Use M15 grade of concrete and Fe 415
grade steel. Check for shear is not required.
7. Design a reinforced concrete slab for a room of 3.5 m x 4.5 m. The super imposed load on
the slab is 3 kN/ m. The slab is simply supported on the four sides and corners are free to lift.
Use M20 and Fe415.
8. A cantilever slab of effective span 1.5 m is subjected to design moment of 20 kN-m.
Calculate depth of slab and area of reinforcement if M20 concrete and mid steel are used.
Take modification factor of 1.5.
9. Two bars of 16 mm diameter of Fe415 in the beam are bent at 45%. Calculate the shear
resisted by bent up bars.
10. State the effective span for stairs as per IS 456: 2000.
11. Write short notes on following:
(a) Effective span of Dog-legged staircase.
(b) Cantilever Chajja.
(c) One way slab.
(d) Two way slab.
(e) Spacing of reinforcement in slab as per IS Code.
12. A flight of dog-legged staircase 1m wide has steps of 150 mm rise and 260 mm tread. The
waist slab is 200 mm thick Calculate the self weight of waist slab and steps in KN/m.
13. Give typical reinforcement details for two way slab in plan and sections.
14. Write the steps in the design of a two way simply sup ported slab with corners free to lift.
15. Design a cantilever chajja having clear span 1.6 m carrying total UDL 5 kN/m. Use M25
concrete and Fe415 steel.

16. Design a cantilever slab of size 2000 mm wide and 4000 mm long to be provided 2.2m above
the floor level. The slab which overhangs 2000 mm beyond the face of the beam is to be cast
in flush with top face of the beam Assume, live load- 1km, Floor finish = 0.5 kN/m, M 20
grade of concrete and Fe 415 of steel.
UNIT 5
Design of RCC Column and Footing design: Uni-axial bending
1. State the assumptions in limit state of collapse-compression.
2. State is specification for cover and number of bars in rectangular, sequare and circular
column.
3. State IS specification for diameter and spacing of lateral ties in column.
4. Write the IS specifications for minimum eccentricity to be considered in design of axially
loaded column.
5. Check the type of a square column, 100 mm x 400mm in section and 3.6 m long with both
ends hinged. Can this column be designed as axially loaded column or not?
6. An RCC short column of size 400 mm x 500 mm is carrying a factored load of 3000 KN.
Design the column assuming emin <0.05 D. use M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
7. Design an RCC column footing using LSM having load on column 600 KN of 250 mm x 350
mm size, Bearing capacity of soil 150 KN/m. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
8. Design of RC column footing using LSM with the following data: Load on column= 600
KN, Size of column=250 x 350 mm. Bearing capacity of soil150 KN/m, Concrete M 20 & Fe
415 steel.
9. Design square column footing by LSM for the follow- ing data. Load on column 650 KN,
size of column 200x300 mm bearing capacity of set-155 KN/m² Use M20 & Fe415 steel.
10. Design a circular column subjected to a load of 1200KN. The column having spiral ties. It is
3M long effectively held in position but not restrained against rotation at both end. Use M25
grade of concrete and Fe415 steel. Use LSM.
11. Design a short axially loaded square column of 500 mm x 500 mm for a service load of
2000KN. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 grade steel.
12. Explain Effective length of column.
