Tutorial 2.0

The document outlines various engineering problems related to dynamics and vibrations, including the calculation of natural frequencies, equations of motion for different mechanical systems, and the analysis of a spring-damper system. It includes specific assignments involving a mine cart, railroad car, rigid bar, circular disc, and a restroom door with a torsional spring and damper. Each problem requires derivations, free body diagrams, and calculations related to displacement, damping coefficients, and system responses.

Tutorial 2

1. A loaded mine cart, weighing 5,000 lb, is being lifted by a frictionless pulley and a
wire rope, as shown in Fig. below. Find the natural frequency of vibration of the cart
in the given position.
2. Derive the equation of motion for the systems shown below
3) A railroad car of mass 2,000 kg traveling at a velocity v =10m/s is stopped at the end of
the tracks by a spring-damper system, as shown in below. If the stiffness of the spring is K =
80 N/mm and the damping constant is C = 20 N s/mm determine
a) the maximum displacement of the car after engaging the springs and damper and
b) the time taken to reach the maximum displacement
4. Find the equation of motion of the uniform rigid bar OA of length l and mass m shown in Fig.
Also, find its natural frequency
5. A uniform circular disc is pivoted at point O, as shown in Fig. Find the natural frequency of the system.
Also find the maximum frequency of the system by varying the value of b.
(Q4. Assignment). A massless rod hinged at one end and supported by a spring of stiffness k at the
other end is given as shown. A mass m is attached at 1/3 of the length from the hinge and a
dashpot having a damping coefficient c is attached at 2/3 of the length from the hinge.
a) Make a complete free body diagram of the system.
b) Define the equation of motion in its standard form.
c) Derive the expression of the natural frequency of the system.
d) If the amplitude of the system is observed to decrease to 30% of the initial value after five
consecutive cycles of motion, determine the damping coefficient c of the system. Consider
k=3.6 × 103 N/m and m=4.5kg.
(Q5. Assignment). Drive the system equation of motion, its natural frequency and find the
response of the system shown in fig below. If d =0.01m, L = 0.25m R = 1m, K = 500 N/m,
𝐶 = 200 𝑁. 𝑠/𝑚, the shaft material has modulus of rigidity 𝐺 = 0.8 ∗ 1011 𝑁/𝑚2 and the
mass of disk m = 20 𝐾𝑔 (initial velocity 𝜃0 = 5𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠, initial rotation 𝜃0 = 0)
Q6. (Assignment)
The restroom door shown below is equipped with a torsional spring (at the lower hinge) and a torsional viscous
damper (at the upper hinge) so that it automatically returns to its closed position after being opened. The door has
a mass of 60kg and a centroidal moment of inertia about an axis parallel to the axis of the door’s rotation of 7.2
kg. m2. The torsional spring has a stiffness of 25 N.m/rad.

A. Draw the FBDs (for external forces and internal forces separately) at an arbitrary instant of time.
B. Considering a one-degree-of-freedom system, model the restroom door mathematically.
C. What will be the damping coefficient so that the system is critically damped?
D. A man with an arm load of packages, but in a hurry, kicks the door to cause it to open. What angular
velocity must his kick impart to cause the door to open 70o?
E. Show the response graphically
