Task 1 – Written Questions

1. Briefly explain the obligations of managers and business owners in regard to work health and
safety.

Employers must constantly be aware of potential risks, notify the management of any
concerns, adhere to safe work practices, and behave responsibly at work. Supervisors have a
responsibility to monitor workplace health and safety risks and provide guidance to staff on
how to reduce or eliminate them.

2. Outline at least two (2) Work Health and Safety (WHS) responsibilities of workers whilst at
work.

The following explains the two Occupational Health and Safety (WHS) duties that employees
have when they are at work:
- Comply with any reasonable instructions, rules, and guidelines that the employer or
employers have supplied at work.
- Take reasonable precautions for both your personal health and safety as well as those of
others.

3. Identify and document the title and date of the WHS Act and Regulation for the state in
which you are located.

Certain amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 2011 and the
Occupational Health and Safety Regulation of 2017 become operative on July 1, 2019.

4. Code of Practice:
a. Discuss the purpose of a code of practice.

The code of practice serves the objective of providing detailed safety information and
standards for certain work tasks in order to help achieve the requirements set out by the
laws related to health and safety at work (WHS).

b. Give an example of a code of practice, including its title and key purpose.

We may give an example by describing external behaviors like conflicts of interest and
secrecy.
5. The Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 state how to manage risks to health and
safety with regard to hazardous manual tasks. List two (2) issues that should be addressed
when determining control measures in the workplace.

Health and safety management is essential for hazardous manual occupations in order to
identify hazards, assess risks, control risks, and monitor and review safety precautions, to
mention two elements that impact control measures. in the workplace by the
implementation of engineering and administrative controls, the removal of hazards, or the
substitution of a less hazardous alternative.

6. Explain three (3) ways in which hazards can be identified in the workplace.

The three categories of hazards may be distinguished using the following steps:
- Frequent cleaning and hazard audits and inspections.
- Analyzing information provided by manufacturers and suppliers of materials and
equipment.
- Investigating accidents and incidents.

7. Discuss the process of risk assessment and control in workplace health and safety.

In addition to assessing the degree of risk and the probability of an accident, sickness, or
death, the assessment method may be used to identify risk factors and hazards that could
jeopardize the health and safety of employees. and appropriately assess, evaluate, and
analyze risk.

8. Hierarchy of control:
a. Explain the purpose of the hierarchy of control and each of the options available from
most effective to least effective.

The hierarchy of controls seeks to limit workplace risks by employing a methodical

approach to remove or minimize hazards and rating risk controls from the most reliable
and protected to the least dependable and protected.

b. Provide an example for each.

We can enumerate the options and examples in the following order, from most to least
effective:
- Eliminating possible trip risks from the floor and getting rid of unpleasant materials are
two instances of hazard and hazard removal.
- One strategy to lower danger is to use water-based inks instead than solvent-based
ones.
- One example of such administrative control is the establishment of rules for the safe
functioning of machinery.
- Helmets, respirators, eye protection, glasses, and earplugs are examples of personal
protective equipment (PPE).

9. List three (3) reasons why it is important to consult with staff when implementing or
reviewing WHS procedures and policies in the workplace.

Involving employees in the adoption or assessment of WHS workplace rules and procedures
is essential for three reasons:
- A safe and secure work environment.
- Team members communicate openly and intensely with one another.
- Acknowledge threats, assess risks, and decide how to mitigate or eliminate them.

10. List five (5) examples of WHS documentation that should be accessible and available to staff.

The following are five instances of WHS paperwork that employees should have access to:
- Policies.
- Roles, duties, and accountability were documented.
- Control and evaluation of documents.
- Records and registers.
- Statements and procedures for safe work methods.

11. How do you conduct a WHS consultation?

Communication with the workforce is necessary for detecting hazards and assessing risks,
determining how to eliminate or decrease those risks, determining if the facilities are
sufficient for the welfare of employees, and proposing changes that might affect the health
or safety of employees.

12. Discuss the process for assessing implications of near misses in relation to incidents, injuries,
and illnesses in the work area.

The process of reporting near-misses involves monitoring potential hazards or near-misses

that, with luck or proactive actions, may have led to accidents or incidents. For example, a
worker may have been in risk of being injured by a piece of equipment, but they managed to
get away in time.
13. What are the features of effective workplace learning opportunities?

Employee learning routes that incorporate webinars, live events, and video training may be
developed based on the data. The features include, for instance, enabling mobile learning,
promoting online collaboration, curating tailored learning, and using feedback to improve
training.

14. Explain how coaching and mentoring can assist in improving a safety culture.

You may start to significantly improve your team's and your personal safety performance by
using Safety Coaching to help you assess your current skill levels, develop role- or
individually-specific programs, and go over the benefits.
