Lesson Plan for Piano Lesson #1

Lauren Southern with Hannah Guo

09/18/2023
In-Class Today:
☐ Get to know each other!

☐ What does Lauren want to learn about piano?

☐ Introduce instrument: Piano (name of different parts, be careful with the lid, be gentle!)

☐ Introduce basic body and hand postures (Body: sit straight and relax, imagine a line that connects
the top of your head, your neck, your back, and the piano bench where you sit on) (Hand: imagine
an egg in the palm of your hand; shoulder: relax and balance; wrist: be natural and know their
weight can help you play softly or loudly! Most of all, be aware of how your body feels when you
play! If you feel very tired, your posture probably is wrong!)
☐ Introduce white notes on the keyboard, and how to find them.

☐ (Optional) Solfege (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do) while playing piano.
Next Week’s Focus: Solfege; Basics on reading music scores.
Assignment #1
Name: _________________________
This is a section of the piano keyboard:

(1) Hannah will help you find the note “C” in lesson ☐

(2) Could you find all the note “C” on this piano keyboard? Mark them! ☐
(3) There are 7 letters used on piano keyboards, and they follow this order: C, D, E, F, G, A, B…
This order repeats itself, always starting with C. After finding all the “C”, could you find all
the other letters on this piano keyboard? Mark them! ☐
(4) Color all the “C” keyboard with your most favorite color, and all the “A” with your second
most favorite color ☐
(5) On a real piano keyboard, play “C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C”, and hum along for Hannah next week!
