University of Nueva Caceres EXERCISE 2

CHEM113: Chemistry for Engineers

Name: Date:
Section: Student No.:
_________________________________________________________________________
Prepared by: Engr. Gina E. Diocos

Instructions: Submit complete solution to the given problems. Use short size
bond paper

1. Calculate the value of Ho for the following reaction using the given
thermochemical equations:
P 4O10(g) + 6 PCl5(g) 10POCl3(g)

(1) 1/4 P4(s) + 3/2 Cl2(g) PCl3(g) H = -306.4 kJ

(2) P 4(s) + 5 O2(g) P4O10(g) H = -
2967.3 kJ
(3) PCl 3(g) + Cl2(g) PCl5(g) H= -84.2 kJ
(4) PCl 3(g) + 1/2 O2(g) POCl3(g) H = -285.7
kJ

2. For each of the following reactions, calculate ΔH, ΔS and ΔG at 250C,

and tell if the reactions will go spontaneously:
(1) N2(g) + 3H2(g) → 2NH3(g)
(2) 2C2H2(g) + 5O2(g) → 4CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)
(3) 2CH3OH(g) + 3O2(g) → 2CO2(g) + 4H2O(g)

ΔHf values: kJ/mol ΔS values: kJ/mol-K

NH3(g) -46.1 NH3(g) 0.192 H2(g)
0.130
C2H2(g) 226.7 C2H2(g) 0.200 N2(g)
0.189
CO2(g) -393.5 CO2(g) 0.213 O2(g) 0.204
H2O(g) -241.8 H2O(g) 0.189
CH3OH(g) - 238.7 CH3OH(g) 0.234
