# PAPER – 1 (A Review on Predicting Student’s Performance using Data Mining

Techniques)
 Abstract –
 techniques for predicting students' performance using data mining
 highlighting gaps in existing methods and factors influencing academic
outcomes
 focuses on using educational data mining to enhance learning strategies
and monitoring systems
 outlines various data mining techniques and their effectiveness in
performance prediction

 Introduction

 Academic performance is critical for universities, often assessed using

grades and extracurricular achievements. Predicting and analyzing
performance helps in strategic planning. Data mining, a popular
technique in education, identifies patterns and provides actionable
insights. However, in Malaysia, research on suitable prediction methods
and influencing factors is limited. This paper systematically reviews
relevant techniques to bridge these gaps.

Methodology
 Gaps in existing prediction methods.
 Variables that influence student performance.
 Effective prediction methods.
 The research used databases like IEEE Xplore, Springer Link, and
ScienceDirect, focusing on studies published from 2002 to 2015.
Attributes such as grades, demographics, and extracurricular activities
were analyzed, along with prediction methods like decision trees, neural
networks, and others.

Technology Used

 Key data mining techniques explored include:

 Decision Trees: Easy-to-interpret, with high accuracy using features like
CGPA.
 Neural Networks: Effective for nonlinear relationships, achieving the
highest prediction accuracy (up to 98%).
 Support Vector Machines: Useful for small datasets.
 Naïve Bayes: Performs well with interdependent attributes.
 K-Nearest Neighbors: Fast and effective for categorizing learners.

Future Scope
The study recommends applying these techniques in real-world educational
systems to:
1. Monitor student performance systematically.
2. Enhance teaching and learning strategies.
3. Develop interventions to support struggling students. Future research
could explore integrating qualitative factors and newer machine learning
algorithms for improved predictions.
