METHODOLOGY OF FLOATING JACKWELL CONSTRUCTION

The methodology for floating jackwell construction typically involves adapting techniques used in
floating caisson construction. Here's a breakdown of the general steps involved:

1 DESIGN AND PLANNING

 Site Investigation: Thoroughly investigate the water body to understand soil conditions,
water depth, and characteristics.
Bathymetry of water body-Bathymetry is the measurement of depth in a body of water. It's
essentially the underwater equivalent of topography on land. Instead of mapping elevations,
bathymetry maps the depths of lakes, rivers, oceans, and other water bodies. The data
collected through bathymetric surveys is used to create bathymetric maps, which illustrate
the underwater terrain. Several techniques are used to measure the bathymetry of a water
body, each with its own advantages and limitations depending on the size, depth, and
characteristics of the water body:
 Echo Sounders (Sonar): This is the most common modern method. A transducer on a boat
emits sound waves that travel to the bottom and reflect back. The time it takes for the echo
to return is used to calculate the depth.
 Single-beam echo sounders: Measure the depth directly beneath the boat and are suitable
for smaller water bodies or reconnaissance surveys.
 Multi-beam echo sounders: Emit a fan-shaped array of sound beams, providing a swath of
depth measurements and allowing for more detailed and efficient mapping of larger areas.
 Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging): This airborne method uses lasers to measure the
distance to the water surface and the seabed in shallower waters (typically less than 50
meters). It's particularly useful for mapping coastal areas and shallow lakes.
 Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB): This technique uses satellite imagery to estimate water
depth in clear, shallow waters by analyzing the spectral reflectance of the seabed.
 Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs): While primarily used to measure water velocity,
some ADCP systems can also collect bathymetric data by analyzing the reflected sound
waves from the bottom.

2 STRUCTURAL DESIGN
Design the jackwell structure considering hydraulic loads, soil pressure, self-weight, and
operational requirements. This includes determining the size, shape, and material (usually
reinforced concrete).
 Floating Stability Analysis: Crucially, analyze the stability of the jackwell during all floating
stages, considering buoyancy and center of gravity.
 Construction Planning: Develop a detailed plan outlining the fabrication location, launching
method, transportation route, positioning, and sinking procedures.

3 FABRICATION
 Off-site Construction: The jackwell, often a large reinforced concrete structure with a hollow
interior, is typically constructed in a dry dock or on a temporary platform near the water.
This allows for efficient and controlled construction
 Sequential Construction: Construction usually starts with the base slab, followed by the
walls, in successive lifts. Movable formwork or slipforming techniques can be employed for
the walls
 Incorporation of Features: Entry ports with screens to prevent debris, pump housing areas,
and other necessary features are integrated during fabrication.

4 LAUNCHING AND TRANSPORTATION

 Release from Fabrication Site: Once the jackwell structure reaches sufficient strength and is
watertight, supporting structures are removed to allow it to float.
 Towing to Location: Using tugboats and guided by cables, the floating jackwell is carefully
towed to its final designated location in the water body.

5 POSITIONING AND SINKING

 Precise Placement: Accurate positioning over the final location is achieved using surveying
techniques and anchoring systems.
 Controlled Sinking: The jackwell is then gradually sunk onto the or prepared foundation.
This is typically done by controlled ballasting, which involves filling the hollow compartments
with water or other heavy materials. Dredging might be required to ensure proper seating.

6 FINALIZATION
 Securing: Once in place, the jackwell might be further secured to the using piles or other
anchoring methods to ensure stability against currents and other forces.
 Pump House Construction (if applicable): If the design includes an overhead pump house, it
is constructed on top of the jackwell structure.
 Connections: Inlet pipes from the water source and outlet pipes to the water treatment
plant are connected.
 Operational Setup: Pumps and other necessary equipment are installed.

6.1 Key Considerations for Floating Jackwell Construction

 Buoyancy Control: Maintaining stable buoyancy throughout the floating and sinking phases
is critical.
 Watertightness: Ensuring the jackwell structure is completely watertight is essential for
floatation and long-term operation.
 Structural Integrity: The structure must be robust enough to withstand stresses during
fabrication, transportation, sinking, and operational conditions.
 Environmental Factors: River flow, tides, and potential for scour around the base need
careful consideration.
 Equipment and Expertise: This type of construction requires specialized marine equipment
and experienced personnel.

This methodology leverages the principles of floating caisson construction, adapting them to the
specific requirements of a water intake structure like a jackwell. The off-site fabrication and
controlled floating and sinking offer advantages in terms of construction speed and potentially
reduced on-site work in the water.
