CRE 01: Rectilinear Motion with Uniform Speed Monday, December 09, 2024

1. In the first and second halves of the total time of a journey, a motorcyclist drove at an average speed of
80 km/h 40 km/h respectively. Find the average speed of the motorcyclist for the second half of total
distance of the journey.

2. A cyclist rides at a constant speed of 15 km/h from town A to town B, then from B to A and finally from
A to B without resting in any of the towns. A pedestrian starts walking on the road from B at a constant
speed of 5 km/h when the cyclist starts first time from A. The distance between the towns is equal to 10
km. When and where do the pedestrians meet the cyclist a third time?

3. In a journey, a car covered the first one third of the way at a speed of v = 46 km/h. Then for one fourth of
the time of the whole journey, the car travelled at a speed of one and a half times of the average speed of
the whole journey. Finally, the car covered the last section at a speed of 2v = 92 km/h. Determine the
maximum speed of the car during the journey.

4. An artillery tank travelled nth part of a journey at an average speed of v1 = 8 km/h and then for the nth
part of the total journey time at an average speed of v2 = 32 km/h. Finally, it has competed the rest of the
journey with an average speed equal to that of the whole journey. Find the average speed of the whole
journey and value of n for what such a movement is possible.

5. A cab driver covers a distance s = 10 km to his destination into two parts, first with an average speed v1
and the second with an average speed v2. The navigator installed in his car shows not only the route but
also the estimated time required to cover the remaining distance. The time required to cover the
remaining distance as predicted by the navigator is equal to the ratio of the remaining distance to the
average speed of the car during the route segment covered.
According to the navigator, if remaining time is  = 12 min at three different instants of time during the
journey, first at t1 = 0 min 30 s, t2 = 3 min 00 s and t3 = 12 min 00 s, find the averages speeds v1 and v2.

6. Two boys A and B walking towards each other with constant velocities vA and vB respectively. When the
distance between them was L, the boy B set free his dog that ran towards the boy A with a constant speed
v0 = 3(vA + vB). Having reached the boy A, the dog walked some time with A and then ran towards B.
Having reached B, the dog walked some time with B and then ran towards A. The dog repeats the process
several times spending equal time with each of the boys. If the total distance the dog ran and walked is
2L and boys meet in 1 min 40 s, how long did the dog ran with speed v0.

7. Five runners start from one point at regular intervals ∆t and run in a straight line to the finish line at
constant speeds. The coach starts together with the first runner with a speed equal to 1/  time of the
first runner. Moreover, each time a runner starts, the coach makes his speed equal to 1/  times of the
speed of this runner. If all the runners and the coach reach the finish line at the same time ∆t after the
start of the fifth runner, calculate value of  correct up to two decimal places.

8. Two racing cars are racing towards each other at the same speed. One of the drivers starts to give sound
signals with a duration τ1, while the other driver determines their duration τ2 = 0.8τ1. The speed of sound
in air is constant and equal to 333 m/s. How fast are the cars going?

9. Between a signal source S and a detector D, two identical plates each of length l = 1 m are moving towards
each other at unequal constant speeds, perpendicular to the line connecting the source and the detector
as shown in the figure.
S
l

If the signal on the way from the source to the detector passes through only one of the plates, then the
receiver glows yellow light; and if the signal passes through both the plates, then the detector glows red.
At some point in time, the detector was yellow for ∆𝑡1 = 3 s, then the red ∆𝑡2 = 3 s, and then yellow again
for ∆𝑡3 = 1 s. Determine how long will it takes 𝜏 for one plate to pass the other?

10. A boy ran on an escalator from the first floor to the second floor as fun, first time with a certain speed
and counts n1 steps, and second time with a smaller speed and counts n2 (n2 < n1) steps. Determine
whether the boy ran in the same direction as that of the escalator movement or in opposite one?

11. A boy was walking towards his home with his dog at a constant speed of 1.0 m/s. When they were 100 m
away from the home, the boy set the dog free. The dog ran on a straight-line path at a constant speed of
4.0 m/s towards the home, reaches the home and returned to the boy at another constant speed of 6.0
m/s, repeatedly till the boy reaches the home. Find the total distance ran by the dog.

12. Large number of pedestrians are walking in a row along a road all with a constant speed maintaining
equal distances between adjacent ones. A boy standing on the road observes that n1 = 5 pedestrians pass
by him per minutes. If the boy starts jogging in the direction of movement of the pedestrians, he will
overtake n2 = 45 pedestrians per minutes, and if he rides a bicycle in the direction opposite to the
movement of pedestrians, he will meet n3 = 105 pedestrians per minutes.
(a) What distance l does a pedestrian covers in the time it takes for the boy to jog a distance s = 100 m?
(b) How many times faster is the boy on the bicycle than on jog?

13. A four-lane highway connects two cities A and B, which are L = 50 km apart. One day, a traffic jam was
formed in a section of length l = 10 km on side for vehicles moving form city A to B. Assume all the
vehicles on the rod are identical cars. Cars moves from the city A to the traffic jam with a uniform speed
v1 = 50 km/h constituting row of uniform density 1 = 55 cars/km, in the traffic jam with a uniform speed
v constituting row uniform density  = 220 cars/km, and after the traffic jam with a uniform speed v2 =
100 km/h constituting a row of uniform density 2 = 30 cars/km. The length of road section of traffic jam
remains uniform.
(a) With what speed u and in which direction does the section of traffic jam is shifting?
(b) With what speed v does the cars move in traffic jam?
(c) How long  will a car take to get from the city A to B, if at the time of starts, the traffic jam was in
midway between the two cities.

14. Two boys P and Q simultaneously start a race. The boy P ran all the time a constant speed v, and another
boy Q ran at a constant speed 0.8v for the first quarter of the way, then a part of the way at a constant
speed 1.5v and finally at a constant speed 0.9v for the remaining distance losing the race to the boy P.
What could be length s2 of the path of the second section ran by Q, if he catches P in a time  after the
start of the race and for what maximum time P could be ahead of Q in end of the race?

15. Four boys must go from a place A to another place B, which is 22 km away from A. They have a bicycle,
which can be ridden by not more than two boys at a time. While walking speed of a boy is 5 km/h, while
riding the bicycle by one boy, the speed is 20 km/h and while riding the bicycle by two boys the speed is
15 km/h. Determine the minimum time, all the four boys can get to town B.
