Acid Base Titration Lab

The lab focuses on understanding the differences between strong and weak acids through an acid-base titration experiment using acetic acid and NaOH. The procedure involves adding NaOH in increments, measuring pH changes, and plotting a titration curve based on the collected data. The results indicate a high percent error in the experimental ionization constant of acetic acid, suggesting the need for more precise measurements.

Title: Acid-Base Titration

Purpose: This lab is being conducted to understand the differences between strong and
weak acids and to plot the pH graph of weak acid strong base titration.

Procedure:

1. Put 50 drops of acetic acid in the 15 mL beaker.

2. Drops of NaOH will be added to the beaker as : 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70,
80, 90, 100.

3. In each interval, the end of pH paper is dipped into the mixture for a split second. The
color is observed and matched with its color on the pH color chart.

4. The pH paper used is changed in between to account for higher pH values.

5. The color of the paper is recorded and this data is put into a table, and from the table,
a titration curve is formed.
Data:

4. The solution is a buffer. As small amounts of base are added to the solution, it will
combine with the acetic acid and there will be little change in pH. It is a buffer
solution because it resists change in pH. The buffer solution is the acetic acid and
CH3COO-.
5. The pH at the half-equivalence point is 5.0.

Discussion and Conclusion:

I continually added small quantities of base to 50 drops of acid. After adding 5-10
drops, I checked the pH of the solution. The experimental value of the ionization constant of
acetic acid is 1.03 x 10^-4. The percent error was 472.22%. The high percent error is due to
the error in the experimental pH value. By getting more precise values from the pH chart, the
error can be minimized. The strong acid and strong base curve starts from a lower pH value
and has a more defined s-curve. The weak acid and strong base curve starts from a higher
pH value and has an s-curve that is not as defined. The ionization constant of a weak acid
can be found by using the pH value and solving from the formula pKa = -logKa. The
ionization of a strong base can be found by using the pH value and solving from the formula
pKb = -logKb.
