Preparation of Body Lotion
Introductory Concept
Skin lotions are liquid formulations designed for external application. They can be
categorized as either suspensions or emulsions. Suspensions involve finely divided, insoluble
solids dispersed within a liquid medium, stabilized by suspending agents or surfactants.
Emulsions, specifically oil-in-water types, consist of tiny oil droplets dispersed throughout a
water-based medium, with surfactants acting as emulsifiers to prevent separation.
Body lotion is a topical skincare product designed to moisturize and hydrate the skin on
the body. It's a staple in many skincare routines, serving to combat dryness and maintain skin
health. Typically, body lotion consists of humectants, emollients, occlusive, emulsifiers,
preservatives and perfumes and other additives.
