MASS TOURISM
Tourism in jamica has reached the development and consolidation stages.
Reasons for visiting Jamica/tourist attractions
1. Tropical islands
2. Tropical climate, with temperatures ranging between 25-300 for activities such as sun bathing.
3. Wonderful hotel eg in Montego bay. They are all inclusive that vistors will not need to move out
side in search of any thing.
4. Marine parks, eg Negril marine park for diving activities.
5. Water falls eg Dunn River falls.
6. Plantation houses that have been turned into museums after the end of slave trade.
7. Cave with cockpits.
8. blue mountains

economic importance
 annually jamica receives about 1.9 visitors
 tourism employes about 22% of the total population.
 Tourism contributes about 24% of the total GDP
 Increased tax base eg vistors departing pay 22$ tax. This is being used to develop
schools, hospitals etc
 Tourism has lead to the multiplier effect, since it generates income to the people which
they use for further investment through increased savings. Eg local farmers selling their
produce
Problems
economic
 Limited expenditure from tourism within the economy this is because most hotels are
all inclusive.
 Leakage, this occurs since most tourism firms and business are foreign owned hence
profit repatriation.
 Un employment, this is because the tourism sector largely depends upon foreign
worker white color jobs eg managers leaving the few low paid jobs such as cleaning
for the local people.
Environmental
 Air pollution due to increase traffic flow in air and land.
 Traffic congestion on the island due to increase number of cars that transport visitors.
 Damaging of coral reefs due to increased number of visitors diving into the sea.
 Clearing of mangrove forests in order to setup hotels. This has increased the rate of
beach and coastal erosion plus loss of habitant for wild life.
 Land reclamation eg the Morass wetland has been drained to create more dry land for
hotel construction in Negril.
 Increased pollution on both land and sea since the carrying capacity is being
exceeded.
Solutions
 Setting up of the Negril marine park natural reserve with the aim of preserving sea life.
 Limiting the number of divers into the sea.
 Restricting visitors from taking coral reefs as souvenirs.
 Setting a water/ waste treatment plant to reduce the levels of water pollution.
Management for Sustainable Tourism in Jamaica
Master Plan
 Limit the development of mass tourism to existing resorts such as Ocho Rios.
 Spread small-scale tourism to other parts of the island.
 Involve the local people more.
Community Tourism
 Local people running small-scale guesthouses.
 This helps to bring tourists to less developed towns, such as Port Antonio, without mass tourism’s
negative effects.
Responsible Tourism
 This involves local people and aims to do as little harm as possible for example:
 Local guides: takes visitors off the beaten track attractions.
 Signposting local food and crafts- tourists are encouraged to buy from Jamaican traders.
 Employment of local staff – this occurs in smaller inland hotels, they also use locally grown food.
 Tourists and local people to communicate- this happens through Jamaican tourist board’s ‘Meet
the People’ website initiative. This helps visitors and locals help each other, which is an important
benefit.
 Educating tourists and locals- this helps them both avoid the negative impacts.
