Assignment 1-January 2025

The document outlines an assignment for a Civil Engineering course on Engineering Hydrology, detailing tasks related to analyzing precipitation data from various stations. It includes specific questions about data consistency, rainfall calculations using different methods, and the preparation of a maximum depth-duration curve. Additionally, it covers the analysis of annual rainfall data and concepts related to climate phenomena such as El Niño, ENSO, and La Niña.

ASSIGNMENT 1

1. Test the consistency of the 22 years of data of the annual precipitation measured at station
A. Rainfall data for station A as well as the average annual rainfall measured at a group of
eight neighboring stations located in a meteorologically homogeneous region are given as
follows.

a) In what year is a change in regime indicated?

b) Adjust the recorded data at station A and determine the mean annual precipitation.
2. The watershed of a stream has five rain gauge stations inside the basin. When Thiessen
polygons were constructed, three more stations lying outside the watershed were found to
have weightages. The details of Thiessen polygons surrounding each rain gauge and
recordings of the rain gauges in the month of July 2023 are given below.

Stations B, D, F are outside the water shed. Determine the average depth of rainfall on the
water shed in July 2012 by
i. Arithmetic mean method
ii. Thiessen mean method
3. Prepare the Maximum depth-duration curve for the 90 minutes storm given below.

4. The annual rainfall values at a station P for a period of 20 years are as follows:

Year Annual Rainfall(cm) Year Annual Rainfall (cm)

1975 120 1985 101
1976 84 1986 109

1982 88 1992 89
1983 76 1993 80
1984 82 1994 91
Determine

(a) The value of annual rainfall at P with a recurrence interval of 15 years.

(b) The probability of occurrence of an annual rainfall of magnitude 100 cm at station P.
(c) 75% dependable annual rainfall at the station.

5. What are EINino, ENSO and LaNina?
