Abstract—The reliability and performance of the AC drives depends on the progress in power electronics, microelectronics,
control methods, artificial intelligent techniques and so on. Fuzzy Logic Concept (FLC), one of the Artificial Intelligent methods
has found high applications in most of the nonlinear systems like the electric motor drives. FLC can be used as controller for any
system without requirement of the system mathematical model unlike that of the conventional electrical drive control, which uses
the mathematical model. Due to the usage of the FLC concept, the efficiency, reliability & performance of the AC drives
increases. In view of the previously mentioned concepts, this paper presents a rule-based fuzzy logic controller scheme designed
and applied for the speed control of an induction motor by using the Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM)
technique. The closed loop speed control of the induction motor using the above technique, thus provides a reasonable degree of
accuracy. Instantaneous space voltage vectors applied by the inverter have redundancy characteristics, which provide some
flexibility for selecting the inverter switching modes. Simulink based block model of induction motor drive is used for the
simulation purposes & its performance is evaluated for the speed control. The inverter duty cycle can also be calculated using the
space vector PWM techniques. The proposed method improves the dynamic performance of the induction machine compared to
the conventional speed control of induction motor drives & has got a faster response time. The simulation results presented in this
paper show the effectiveness of the proposed method, which has got a wide number of advantages.

Abstract—This paper presents the modelling, design & simulation of an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference strategy (ANFIS) for
controlling the speed of the induction motor. Various advanced control techniques has been devised by various researchers across
the world till date, one technique being the use of fuzzy concepts in the control algorithm. These fuzzy based controllers develop
a control signal which yields on the firing of the rule base, which is written on the previous experiences & are then fired to get the
final output. As a result of which, the outcome of the controller is also random & optimal results may not be obtained. To avoid
this, selection of the proper rule base depending upon the situation can be achieved by the use of an ANFIS controller, which
becomes an integrated method of approach for the control purposes & yields excellent results. In the designed ANFIS scheme for
the speed control of IM, neural network techniques are used to select a proper rule base, which is achieved using the back
propagation algorithm. This integrated approach improves the system performance, cost-effectiveness, efficiency, dynamism,
reliability of the designed controller. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the method developed & has got very good
dynamic responses.
Abstract— This paper presents a performance based comparative study of various fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) to control the
speed of squirrel-cage induction motor (SCIM) by replacing the conventional proportional−integral (PI) controller. The fuzzy
logic based controller does not require any identification of motor dynamic to control its speed and also assures the disturbance
rejection with high robustness. Performances of the different fuzzy controllers (i.e. PD−, PI− and PID−like ) are also compared
with the conventional PI speed controller in terms of several performance measures such as peak overshoot (Mp%), settling time
(ts), rise time (tr), steady state error (ess), integral absolute error (IAE), integral squared error (ISE), integral of time-multiplied
absolute error (ITAE) and integral of time-multiplied squared error (ITSE), at different values of load (torque). The simulation
results show the effectiveness of the controllers based on fuzzy logic techniques and, for each performance index, the PI−like
fuzzy speed controller outperformed its conventional counterpart. Moreover, the performance of proportional−integral−derivative
(PID−like) fuzzy speed controller is found best among all the fuzzy controllers discussed in this paper.

Abstract—The most commonly used controller for the speed control of Induction motor is Proportional plus Integral (PI)
controller. However, the PI controller has some disadvantages such as: the high starting overshoot, sensitivity to controller gains
and sluggish response due to sudden disturbance. So, the relatively a new intelligent controller based on Fuzzy set theory is
proposed in this work to overcome the disadvantages of the PI controller. So, this paper presents a study the speed control of
Indirect Vector Controlled Induction motor drive. The performance of the intelligent controller has been investigated through
Matlab/Simulink environment, for different operating conditions. Finally, the results are compared with PI controller and
intelligent Fuzzy controller. It is observed that fuzzy logic based controllers give better responses than the traditional PI
controller for the speed control of Indirect Vector Controlled Induction motor drives.

Performance and Comparison Analysis of Speed Control of Induction Motors using
Improved Hybrid PID-Fuzzy Controller

Abstract—This paper presents a hybrid control system for the speed control of a three-phase squirrel cage induction motor
(SCIM). The proposed method incorporates fuzzy logic with conventional controllers and utilizes the vector control technique.
This method combines the advantages of fuzzy logic controller and conventional controllers to improve the speed response of the
three-phase induction motor. Implementation and simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK of various hybrid system
controllers such as (PI-, PD-, and PID-fuzzy) are compared along with PI controller in terms of several performance
measurements such as rise time (tr), maximum percent overshoot (PO), and settling time (ts) at various load conditions. The
results verified the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid speed controller under different operating conditions and demonstrated
improved performance in speed tracking and system’s stability.

Artificial Neural Network Based Speed and Torque Control of Three Phase
Induction Motor

Abstract— Direct Torque Control (DTC) of Induction Motor drive has quick torque response without complex orientation
transformation and inner loop current control. DTC has some drawbacks, such as the torque and flux ripple. The control scheme
performance relies on the accurate selection of the switching voltage vector. This proposed simple structured neural network
based new identification method for flux position estimation, sector selection and stator voltage vector selection for induction
motors using direct torque control (DTC) method. The ANN based speed controller has been introduced to achieve good dynamic
performance of induction motor drive. The Levenberg-Marquardt back-propagation technique has been used to train the neural
network. Proposed simple structured network facilitates a short training and processing times. The stator flux is estimated by
using the modified integration with amplitude limiter algorithms to overcome drawbacks of pure integrator. The conventional
flux position estimator, sector selector and stator voltage vector selector based modified direct torque control (MDTC) scheme
compared with the proposed scheme and the results are validated through both by simulation and experimentation.

Abstract— This application report presents a solution to control an AC induction motor using the TMS320F2803x
microcontrollers. TMS320F2803x devices are part of the family of C2000 microcontrollers, which enable cost-effective design of
intelligent controllers for three phase motors by reducing the system components and increase efficiency. With these devices, it is
possible to realize far more precise digital vector control algorithms like the field orientated control (FOC). This algorithm’s
implementation is discussed in this document. The FOC algorithm maintains efficiency in a wide range of speeds and takes into
consideration torque changes with transient phases by processing a dynamic model of the motor. This document covers the
following:
• A theoretical background on field oriented motor control principle
• Incremental build levels based on modular software blocks
• Experimental results
Abstract— The induction motors have wide range of applications for due to its well-known advantages like brushless structures,
low costs and robust performances. Over the past years, many kind of control methods are proposed for the induction motors and
direct torque control has gained huge importance inside of them due to fast dynamic torque responses and simple control
structures. However, the direct torque control method has still some handicaps against the other control methods and most of the
important of these handicaps is high torque ripple. This paper suggests a new approach, Fuzzy logic based space vector
modulation, on the direct torque controlled induction motors and aim of the approach is to overcome high torque ripple
disadvantages of conventional direct torque control. In order to test and compare the proposed direct torque control method with
conventional direct torque control method simulations, in Matlab/Simulink, have been carried out in different working
conditions. The simulation results showed that a significant improvement in the dynamic torque and speed responses when
compared to the conventional direct torque control method.

Design and Analysis of Speed Control Using Hybrid PID-Fuzzy Controller for
Induction Motors

Abstract— This paper presents a hybrid PID-Fuzzy control system for the speed control of a three-phase squirrel cage induction
motor. The proposed method incorporates fuzzy logic and conventional controllers with utilization of vector control technique.
This method combines the advantages of fuzzy logic controller and conventional controllers to improve the speed response of the
induction motor. The design of fuzzy system consists of 9 fuzzy variables and 49 IF-THEN rules that define the behavior of the
system. The FLC observes the loop error signal and correspondingly control the PID input error signal so that the actual speed
signal matches the reference speed signal with reduced rise time, settling time, and peak over shoot. Implementation and
simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK of various hybrid system controllers such as (PI-, PD-, and PID fuzzy) are
compared along with conventional PI controller in terms of several performance measurements such as rise time (tr), maximum
percent overshoot (Mp), settling time (ts), and steady state error (Ess) at various load conditions. The results verified the
effectiveness of the proposed hybrid speed controller under different operating conditions and demonstrated improvements in
performance in speed tracking and system’s stability.
Comparison study of Vector Control of Induction Motor Using Rotor Flux
Estimation by Two Different Methods

Abstract— The Speed Control of Induction motor is one of the important areas of research for the Electrical Engineers. Since the
requirement and industrial applications of induction motors cannot be neglected, their fine speed control is one of the major
objectives for the control drive engineers. The vector control of induction motors provide one of the most suitable and popular
speed control technique presently used. The scalar control techniques available on the contrary were simple to implement but
have the coupling effect ultimately responsible for the sluggish response which further made system prone to instability due to
higher order system effect. This paper will show the comparison of vector control using PI Controller with the rotor flux
estimation by two different methods and the analysis. The simulation study of results will form the basis of the conclusion.

Speed Control of Three Phase Induction Motor Using Universal Bridge and
PID Controller

Abstract— Speed control technique are generally essential in adjustable speed drive system. This system requires variable
voltage and frequency supply which is obtained from a three phase voltage source inverter. This paper presents the speed control
of induction motor fed by a three phase voltage source inverter using pulse width modulation method and universal bridge. To
control the peak dc link voltage of voltage source inverter, a PID controller was designed. The performance analysis of open loop
and closed loop speed control system is carried out in Matlab/Simulink. The simulation result shows that the speed controller has
a good dynamic response and can control the induction motor successfully with a better performance.

Scalar Control of Squirrel Cage Induction Motors-Fundamentals and Scope

Abstract—If classical techniques such as the root locus, Bode plots and Nyquist diagrams are used for designing fixedstructure
speed controllers for ac drives, the design would normally be done around a nominal value of the controlled plant. Generally, a
sensitivity analysis would subsequently be done to ensure that the design specifications are met when the plant parameters
change. This procedure can and has worked well. In this paper an alternative is proposed where the parameter variations are
included at the outset of the design task. The Nichols chart lends itself rather well to this application since it represents both
magnitude and phase information on a single diagram. By using this alternative, it may be possible to reduce the overall time
needed to complete the design. The particular technique is called Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) which is used in
conjunction with the Nichols chart. This paper presents the basics of QFT and shows how it can be used for the design of fixed-
structure controllers for parameter-sensitive plants in conjunction with the Nichols chart. A design is presented and verified
experimentally.
Abstract—When connected to main power supply, induction motors run at their rated speed, however there are many
applications where variable speed operations are required. Although a range of induction motor control techniques are available,
generating variable frequency supply is a popular control technique, having a constant voltage to frequency ratio in order to attain
constant (maximum) torque throughout the operating period. This control technique is called as variable frequency control. The
main aim of this honours degree project paper emphasizes on the development of a general purpose universal board that is
capable of controlling the speed of single or three phase induction motor with minor software and hardware modifications. The
absolute system consists of the control, driver and the power circuits. The control circuit includes the power supply circuit and
the microcontroller. The power circuit includes the full-bridge single-phase Pulse Width Modulation inverter. Simulation was
done using MATLAB Simulink software. The system was implemented, tested and the experimental results are examined and
discussed.
