I. SCOPE:
This specification provides the following Twin Disc requirements for bronze material used in
finished parts and continuous-cast bar stock:
• Specifications
• Purchasing requirement
• Quality requirements
• Drafting instructions

This standard is not intended as an application guide for this material.

II. SPECIFICATION FOR CONTINUOUS CAST BARS:

1. S947:
a. Description:
This material is intended primarily (but not exclusively) for bearings and for
parts that require adequate static strength in addition to corrosion resistance,
and good wear resistance. It applies to all sizes and cross-sections unless
otherwise stated.

b. Mechanical Properties:
i. Required Mechanical Properties:
1. Minimum Tensile Strength: 241 MPa ( 35 ksi)
2. Minimum Yield Strength: 138 MPa (20 ksi)
3. Minimum Elongation: 10%
ii. Other Properties for Reference Only:
1. Brinnell Hardness: 65
2. Density: 8.93 g/cc (0.323 lb/in3)
3. Modulus of Elasticity: 100 GPa (14.5.0x103 ksi)
4. CTE: 18.0x10-6 mm/mm/°C
(10.0x10-6 in/in/°F)
5. Fatigue strength: 110 MPa (16 ksi)

c. Approved Alloys by Country/Society Designation:

i. US: ASTM B505, C93200
ii. Germany: DIN 1705 / GC-CuSn7ZnPb / 2.1090.04
iii. Italy: UNI 7013-7 / Gct-CuSn7Zn4Pb6

d. Heat Treatment:
As delivered
NOTES:
(1) All required mechanical properties to be verified from a sample taken at the half radius
of the bar.

III. PURCHASING REQUIREMENTS:

Purchase order description is “Bronze per S947, Rev X”, e.g. S947, Rev B. Any additional
descriptors are for reference only.

Material certificates for the “as received” condition of the part are to accompany the material.
The material certificate will indicate the relevant Twin Disc specification, the current revision
level for the Twin Disc specification and contain test results verifying that all mechanical
properties listed in sections II.X.b.i , e.g. “S947 Required Mechanical Properties”, meet or
exceed the listed specifications. The “Required Mechanical Properties” are a basis for
acceptance or rejection of material.

Cut bars showing evidence of piping or bursts are not acceptable for any material supplied
under this standard.

Continuous Cast Bar OD, length, turned size, etc., are within the discretion of the Purchasing
Department.

When a shipment contains bar stock from multiple heat lots, the bar stock is to be separated
by heat lot in/on separate containers or skids. A single container or skid must never contain
bar stock from multiple heat lots. The container or skid must clearly identify the heat lot
number for the bar stock contained in that container or skid.

The requirements specified in this standard also apply to machined complete parts purchased
from sub-contractors.

VI. QUALITY REQUIREMENTS:

Reported data on a supplier's certificates of conformance (material heat certificate) shall be
reviewed and disposed for S947, e.g. S947 material conformance in lieu of physical material
tests. The disposition outcome extends equally to the physical state of the material on-hand.
Reference work instruction WIS 7.4.3.5 for detailed information on the document review
process.

VII. DRAFTING INSTRUCTIONS:

The title block on the detail drawing will call out the material, bar stock part number (if
applicable) and additional heat treat information. The “Material” block will state “Bronze per
S947”.

If additional properties are required for the material, these items must also be noted on the
drawing. Avoid reference to this material specification with exceptions, i.e., “same as S947
except ……”
