Sophie Fellowship Application 2025

The document outlines the application instructions for the Sophie Fellowship 2025, emphasizing the importance of problem-solving approaches over solutions. It includes ten mathematical problems that applicants must solve without external resources, and submissions must be original and adhere to specified formats. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2025, and applicants are prohibited from discussing the problems with others until then.

Instructions
• Do not feel discouraged if you are unable to solve some of these problems - we do not
expect you to be able to do all of them. What we do want is to see how you approach a
problem, and your thinking during the process. In particular, make sure you submit any
ideas you may have on a problem as well.

• The use of Geogebra, Wolfram Alpha, and any other online resources is strictly not
permitted.

• We expect all your solutions to be original, please do not plagiarize. If you have seen a
problem before, please mention this in your submission.

• You are allowed to submit your solutions either handwritten (legibly) or in LATEX. You
may upload your submission along with the rest of your application in the form linked in
the website. (the file cannot exceed 10MB in size)

• Until the deadline (1st April, 2025) passes, you are forbidden from discussing the prob-
lems (or anything related) with others, either in person or online. Should you require
clarifications on any of the problems or have any general queries, mail us at organiz-
ers@sophiefellowship.in.

• Make sure you read all of the other details about applying here

• Finally, enjoy the problems and have fun!

Sophie 2025 Application

Problem 1
A point D is chosen on side BC of triangle ABC with incentre I. The perpendicular
bisector of BC meets BI and CI at U and V respectively. The circle (BDU ) intersects
AB at E, and the circle (CDV ) intersects AC at F , and the circles (BDU ) and (CDV )
meet at K. Prove that points E, F, K, I are concylic.

Problem 2
Find all polynomials P with integer coefficients, such that for all positive integers n, the
expression
P (2025n − 1)P (2025n − 2) . . . P (2025n − 2025)
is divisible by n.

Problem 3
Let z1 , z2 , . . . , zn be distinct complex numbers such that

|z1 | + · · · + |zn | = 1

Show that there exists a set S ⊆ {z1 , z2 , . . . , zn } with

X 1
z ⩾ .
4
z∈S

Problem 4
2025 cats, starting at distinct positions, have begun to roam the land, each with the
same speed but in distinct directions. Show that in some time from now the cats will be
positioned at the vertices of a convex polygon.

Problem 5
Let ABC be a triangle with points M, N on side BC satisfying BM = CN . Let E and F
be the foot of altitudes from B and C onto AC and AB respectively. Let the circumcircle
of BM F meet BE again at P and the circumcircle of CN E meet CF again at Q. Show
that ∠BAP = ∠CAQ.

Problem 6
In its interior, an equilateral triangle with unit dimensions holds a piece of fish and a cat.
1
Every second, the cat picks a vertex and jumps in the direction towards that vertex 2025 of
the distance to it. Show that regardless of the initial position of the cat, it can choose a
sequence of jumps that will bring it within a distance of 2025−2025 to the piece of fish.

Problem 7
Given a sequence of real numbers X1 , X2 , X3 , . . . and a natural number T , prove that if
among all possible ordered T -element sets of the form (Xk+1 , Xk+2 , . . . , Xk+T ) there are
no more than T distinct sets, then the sequence X1 , X2 , X3 , . . . is eventually periodic.

Problem 8
Find all pairs of positive integers (m, n) such that

mn | nm − 1

Problem 9
1
For a positive integer n define a sequence {xi }0≤i≤n as x0 = 2 and

x2k−1
xk = xk−1 + ,
n
for all 1 ≤ k ≤ n. Show that xn ∈ 1 − n1 , 1 .

Problem 10
Let n be an odd positive integer which is not of the form 3k for k ⩾ 0. Prove that there
exists a set of integers S such that |s| < n/2 for all s ∈ S and the product
Y n+s
|s|
s∈S

is of the form 3ℓ for some ℓ ⩾ 0.
