Class 9 CBSE Geometry: Axioms, Postulates & Theorems

Euclid s Axioms

1. Things equal to the same thing are equal to one another.

2. If equals are added to equals, the wholes are equal.
3. If equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal.
4. Things that coincide with one another are equal.
5. The whole is greater than the part.
6. Things that are double of the same things are equal.
7. Things that are halves of the same things are equal.

Euclid s Postulates

1. A straight line may be drawn from any one point to any other point.
2. A terminated line can be extended indefinitely.
3. A circle can be drawn with any center and any radius.
4. All right angles are equal to one another.
5. If a line intersects two lines such that the interior angles on the same side are less than two right
angles, the two lines will meet on that side.

Lines and Angles - Theorems

1. Vertically opposite angles are equal.

2. If a transversal intersects two parallel lines:
- Alternate interior angles are equal.
- Corresponding angles are equal.
- Interior angles on the same side are supplementary.
3. If a transversal makes alternate interior angles equal, the two lines are parallel.
4. Two lines parallel to the same line are parallel to each other.

Triangles - Theorems & Congruence Rules

1. The sum of angles in a triangle is 180 degrees.

2. The exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the two opposite interior angles.
3. Triangle Inequality: Any side of a triangle is smaller than the sum of the other two sides.
4. The side opposite a larger angle is longer.
5. Pythagoras Theorem: a + b = c for a right-angled triangle.
6. Converse of Pythagoras Theorem: If a + b = c , then the triangle is right-angled.
7. Triangle Congruence: SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, RHS.

Quadrilaterals - Theorems

1. A diagonal of a parallelogram divides it into two congruent triangles.

2. In a parallelogram, opposite sides and angles are equal, and diagonals bisect each other.
3. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if one of the following holds:
- Opposite sides are equal.
- Opposite angles are equal.
- One pair of opposite sides are equal and parallel.
- Diagonals bisect each other.
4. The diagonals of a rhombus bisect each other at right angles.
5. The diagonals of a rectangle are equal and bisect each other.
6. The diagonals of a square are equal and bisect each other at right angles.
7. Midpoint Theorem: The line joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side
and half its length.

Circles - Theorems

1. Equal chords subtend equal angles at the center.

2. The perpendicular from the center to a chord bisects the chord.
3. Chords equidistant from the center are equal.
4. The angle subtended by an arc at the center is double the angle subtended at any other point.
5. Angles in the same segment of a circle are equal.
6. The opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary.
7. A tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact.
8. Two tangents drawn from an external point to a circle are equal in length.
