Isaiah Thomas

Introduction
Does anyone wanna try to guess how tall I am? Well, I'm 5'9, the exact height
that Isaiah Thomas is. Isaiah Thomas is a basketball player in the NBA for the Boston
Celtics. He was born on Feb. 7, 1989, in Tacoma, Washington. Some of you might be
wondering if he's related to the Isiah Thomas who played for the Bad Boy Pistons. But
they are not related in any kind of way, and actually spell there names differently.
Instead of spelling it I-S-I-A-H, his parents spelled it I-S-A-I-A-H, like the Isaiah in the
Bible [spell it on board]. On April 20th, 2006 (4/20), he committed to The University of
Washington.

First Body Paragraph

Isaiah Thomas attended Washington for three years. He made an immediate
impact for Washington, as he was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. He also had a
solid sophomore year, and was selected first team All-Pac-10. But his junior year was
one to remember. For the second year in a row he was selected first team All-Pac-10,
but his performance in the Pac-10 Championship game was one to remember.
Washington was facing #16 ranked Arizona Wildcats, the third game between the two
that year (series was 1-1). The game went into overtime, and Thomas was red-hot. With
19 seconds to go, game tied 75-75, Isaiah had the ball in his hands. He let the clock run
down, did a crossover, took a step-back jumper, and got it to fall just as time expired to
win the Pac-10 Championship game. Shortly after his junior season ended, on March
31, 2011, Thomas declared for the NBA draft.

Second Body Paragraph

After months of hard work, draft day has finally arrived. It's the day when 60
collegiate athletes dreams finally come true, the day they've been training for their
whole lives. For some, it's not a matter of if they get drafted, but when. But most players
don't have this luxury, and they spend the night anxiously waiting, wondering if the
phone will ever ring. Isaiah Thomas was one these people. In the NBA draft there are 2
rounds, so a total of 60 selections are made. Well, 59 selections had been made, and
not one of them had been Isaiah. At this point, I'm sure Isaiah Thomas was probably
already thinking of other ways to make it into the NBA. The Sacramento Kings had the
last pick in the draft, and just when it seemed like his chances of finally being drafted
were gone, the Kings took a chance on the 5'9 point guard out of Washington. All of the
hard work had paid off, and Isaiah Thomas, also known as Mr. Irrelevant (a nickname
given to the player picked last in the draft), finally got his shot.
When you're the last pick in the draft, and your only 5 feet 9 inches tall,
expectations are pretty low. It just doesn't make sense for a player of his size and
limited play-making ability to succeed in the NBA. But that's what makes Isaiah Thomas
special. His first two seasons in the league were solid, but his third year in the league is
when he really started to stand out. He became the shortest player ever to record a
triple-double (24 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds) in an overtime win against the
Wizards, and started to become one of the leagues top point guards. But in his fourth
year in the league he faced some adversity. Even though he had had a solid three years
in Sacramento, the Kings were ready to move on. The Kings haven't made it to the
playoffs since 2006 (and still haven't), and they didn't feel like Isaiah was the answer. So
that offseason he was traded to the Suns, which didn't last long at all. It only took 46
games for Isaiah and the Suns to part ways. Well, the Boston Celtics, who were in
desperate need for more scoring, jumped on this opportunity. On February 19, 2015, the
Celtics traded for Isaiah Thomas.
Third Body Paragraph
Ok, lets rewind now. The 2013-2014 season for the Celtics was abysmal. We
finished just 25-57, and it was our first time missing out on the playoffs since 2007. Well,
before acquiring Thomas, it looked as if the 2014-15 season wasn't going to be much
different. We were an underwhelming 20-31. But after acquiring Thomas, we finished
the season on a 20-11 run. To put it into perspective, pre-Isaiah trade took 51 games to
reach 20 wins. But post-Isaiah trade only took 31 games to reach 20 wins. On top of
this, the Celtics were able to sneak into the playoffs as the 7th seed. Even though we
were eliminated first round, we finally had the first piece of the puzzle to building a
championship caliber team. Entering the 2015-2016 season, expectations were
definitely higher. Not only did Isaiah perform well, his play earned him a spot on the
Eastern Conference All-Star team. Thomas started 79 games, averaged 22 points per
game, 6 assists per game, and led the C's to a 48-34 record, 5th in the Eastern
Conference standings. In the first round of the playoffs, the Celtics squared off against
the Atlanta Hawks. Atlanta won the first two games, but the C's weren't ready to give up
quite yet. Isaiah dropped 42 points in a game 3 victory, a career high. In game 4, Isaiah
had 28 points and evened the series 2-2 in an overtime win. Even though the Hawks
were able to hold off a Celtics comeback, this season enabled the Celtics to take
another step in the right direction to building a championship-caliber team.
Conclusion Paragraph
With the addition of Al Horford, an All-Star center, the Celtics are now ready to
take their game to the next level. But this whole rebuilding process probably would have
taken a lot longer if it wasn't for Isaiah Thomas. Who knew, the 5'9-last pick of the draft-
point guard out of Washington, would make such a huge impact on a franchise that had
almost hit rock bottom, (never got as bad as Philadelphia, of course). This inspires me
everyday to know that whatever obstacles I face, I can get over them, one way or
another. Thank you for your time.
