SOLUTION_to_Problems_for_Practice_-_Process_Fundamentals

The document discusses the output capacity and constraints of various machines and processes in a production system. It highlights the maximum outputs, the effects of increasing outputs for specific machines, and identifies bottlenecks in the system. Additionally, it provides calculations for work-in-progress inventory and throughput rates for different scenarios.

Problem 1

a) What is the maximum output per hour of the steel product? 40 units
b) By how much would the output be improved if the output of B was increased to 90 per hour? No
change
c) By how much would the output be improved if the output for C was increased to 50 per hour? By 10
units, i.e.., new output will be 50 units
d) By how much would the output be improved if the output for C was increased to 70 per hour? New
output will be 60 units per hour as now D becomes the constraint
e) What is the effect on the system if machine A can only manage an output of 90 in one hour? No effect
(relatively lesser inventory and lower load for B)
f) What is the effect on the system if machine C can only manage an output of 30 in one hour? The
overall output will reduce by 10, that is, the output of the system will be 30 units
g) What is the effect on the system if machine B is allowed to drop to an output of 30 in one hour? B will
be the new bottleneck. The system can only produce 30 units as resource C will only receive 30 units
as input from B and can only process as much. So, the system can only produce 30 units.

WIP Inv = TR * FT
4 cust = 20cust / hr * FT
FT = 1/5 hrs or 12 mins

Paula Caplin

a) WIP Inv = TR * FT = 120/day * 4 days = 480 units

b) 240 = 120/day * FT
FT = 2 days

Green Grass
2400 units in 40 hours
Throughput Rate (TR) = 2400/40 = 60 units per hour
CT = 1/TR = (1/60 units per hour) * 60mins per hour = 1 minute / unit
a. 10 + 8 + (15+10)/2 + 9 = 39.5 minutes

b. In an hour: B1 can handle 60mins/10mins per cust = 6 customers/hour; B2 can handle 60mins/8 mins per cust = 7.5 cust/hr; B3 can handle 10
customers/hour (60/15 + 60/10); B4 can handle 60/9=6.7 cust. B1 is the bottleneck.

c. The process is limited by step B1, therefore the entire process can only serve 6 customers per hour.
a. 5 + 2 + (4+2)/2 + 6+3 = 19 minutes

b. In an Hour: Waiting can handle 60mins/5mins per cust = 12 customers/hour; Starter can handle 60mins/2 mins per cust = 30 cust/hr; Veg/Non Veg option
can handle 45 customers/hour (60/4 + 60/2); Dessert can handle 60/6=10 cust/hr; Payment can handle 60/3=20 cust . Dessert is the bottleneck.

c. The process is limited by step Dessert, therefore the entire process can only serve 10 customers per hour.
