GRE-STRESS-ANALYSIS PPT

The document provides an introduction to GRE/FRP pipe stress analysis, detailing its applications, material limitations, and layout considerations. It emphasizes the importance of proper support design, stress analysis parameters, and the need for vendor data to ensure reliability and safety in GRE/FRP piping systems. Additionally, it outlines key definitions and calculations related to pressure design and structural thickness based on ISO standards.

INTRODUCTION TO GRE/FRP

PIPE STRESS ANALYSIS

WHAT IS GRE / FRP?
Application of GRE/FRP
Materials & Temperaturs Limit
Layout Aspects
The GRE products are proprietary & hence pipe,
fittings dimensions will vary.
In absence of vendor data proceed with dimensions
given in ISO.
Maximize the use of prefabricated spools
Keep in mind expansion rate, span, UV radiation,
installation, tie-ins, maintenance etc.
GRE fittings are longer and bulky, take care of it.
Support Aspects
Standard CS support may not mach GRE as
pipe OD may be different.
Use of Saddles & Elastomeric pads may allow
use of standard support.
Support design should be as per vendor catalog.
Heavy in line items like valves, strainers should
be independently supported.
Parasite support (pipe to pipe) are not allowed.
Continue……
 Avoid supports on fittings.
Excessive clamping forces can cause pipe
crushing.
GRE spans are much less than the CS spans.
In absence of vendor data use ISO 14692
Piping should be supported for shock loadings
Take special care in freezing environment, take
care of volumetric expansion
Metallic-GRE interface
In order to have reliable flange sealing, generally
steel ring elastomer gaskets are used.
Gasket material should match with pressure,
temperature, chemical resistance requirements
PTFE-envelope type gaskets should be avoided
for large size and high pressure.
Stress Analysis of GRE/FRP
Property GRE/FRP CS Remark

Density 1850 kg/cu.m 7800 kg/cu.m Load on support is less in case of GRE

Co-eff of thermal 27E-6mm/mmdeg C 11E-6mm/mm Expansion is almost 2.5 times of CS.

expansion * this value may change deg C
depending on fibre and
resin

Modulus Axial= 12000N/sq.mm Elastic= 211365 Considerable difference in strength of GRE & CS. Anchor
Shear= 11400 N/sq.mm N/sq.mm loads are less in GRE/FRP

Allowable Stress 4000 PSI to 20000 PSI 20000PSI Strength of GRE is varies from drastically and hence
proper vendor data is must.

Joints Threaded or glued Welded GRE joints are to be checked for higher axial loads and

What minimum we should know

 Few Important Definitions:

1. Design Pressure
2. Design Temperature
3. LTHP
4. LTHS
5. LCL
6. STHP
Design for Pressure
Design for Pressure
 Qualified Pressure -
- this is the pressure determined as per ISO14692,
clause 6.2.2
- derived for 20 years of life span
based on different tests like regression test,
survival test carried out at minimum 65 deg C or
Design temp (if higher)
- For life span more than 20years, refer clause 6.2.7
of ISO to calculate qualified pressure.

MINIMUM STRUCTURAL THICKNESS (WALL THICKNESS) CALCULATION

ts =t-tl

Note:
The above equation is based on ISO 14692-3:2002 clause 8.5 but not directly copied from ISO.
For stress analysis use structural thickness and not the Selected thickness
Generally Fe = 1.5 for short term & Fe=3 for long term vacuum
