Tha 045 Working On Tower Scaffolds
NOTE: These assessments have been compiled to identify the potential risks and the precautions
required eliminating, reducing or adequately controlling them.
POTENTIAL RISK: FAULTY OR INADEQUATE ERECTION OF TOWER
• This can be due to a lack of information as to the intended use of the scaffold once completed, or
the erection not being performed within the relevant approved codes of practice.
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN
• Supervisors shall make assessments and/or responsible persons to establish the proposed use of
the scaffold, taking into account numbers of personnel, plant and equipment, etc.
• Erection shall be performed in line with current approved codes of practice and erected by
competent personnel.
• Scafftag, etc. shall be placed at every access point to the scaffold detailing the intended use of the
scaffold.
POTENTIAL RISK: FALLS OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT.
• Serious injuries can occur when tools or equipment are knocked off scaffolds onto personnel
below.
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN
• Supervisors and erectors shall ensure that toe boards have been fitted on the tower scaffold to
prevent tools or equipment being knocked off the scaffold.
• The area surrounding the tower scaffold shall be barrier off (if necessary) to prevent access of
other personnel into the "danger area".
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN
• If personnel require access to an area outside that provided by the scaffold then they shall
contact their supervisors and/or responsible person so that adequate means of access can be
provided.
• Personnel shall not work outside the barriers of the scaffold unless suitable means of fall
protection are provided, i.e. harnesses, fall nets, etc.
• Life jackets shall be worn when working near and/or over water.
• Personnel shall never "ride" on the tower scaffold whilst it is being moved around the work
place.
• Once the tower scaffold has been moved a competent person to ensure that it is safe to use
shall check it.
POTENTIAL RISK: JAGGED ENDS ON SCAFFOLD TUBES
• This can occur when lengths of scaffolding tubes are shortened by flame cutting with
oxy/acetylene torches.
PRECATIONS TO BE TAKEN
• Cold cutting of scaffolding tubes shall be utilized whenever practical.
• Ends of tubes, which have been flame cut or cold cut, shall be dressed immediately and a
suitable plastic end cap fixed.
• Supervisors and/or responsible persons shall visually check the scaffolding during walk
around to ensure these procedures are being followed and advice personnel if not.
• Quick-fit scaffold shall not be cut.
• All scaffolds shall be checked by a competent person and documented.
