Animation-Lect 02-25

This lecture covers various types of movements in animation, including camera and character movements, as well as keyframe easing techniques. It emphasizes the importance of inbetweening for creating smooth transitions and fluid motion in both 2D and 3D animations. Additionally, it discusses the 12 principles of animation, including squash and stretch, anticipation, and the role of camera angles in enhancing audience engagement.

1- Squash and stretch
• The purpose of squash and stretch is to give a sense of weight and
flexibility to drawn or computer animated objects.
2- Anticipation
• Anticipation: a baseball player making a pitch prepares for the action
by winding his arm back.
• Anticipation is used to prepare the audience for an action, and to
make the action appear more realistic.[9] A dancer jumping off the
floor has to bend the knees first;
• 3. Camera
• The arrangement of the viewing angle (camera) also has a crucial role
in appealing to audiences.
Exploring Inbetweening in Animation
• Animation, whether traditional or computer-based, relies on
various techniques to create the illusion of motion. One of the
most vital is inbetweening, or tweening, where frames are
generated between keyframes to create smooth transitions and
fluid motion.

• Inbetweening, or tweening, involves creating frames between two

keyframes to produce movement. Keyframes define the start and
end points of transitions, while inbetween frames smooth out
these transitions, resulting in fluid motion. In 2D animation, for
example, keyframes might capture a character’s starting and
ending poses, with inbetweens filling the gap, creating natural
movement.
The Role of Inbetweening in Animation
• At its core, inbetweening creates the illusion of continuous
motion. Without it, animation would appear jarring, with
objects "jumping" from one position to another. Whether
done by hand or via computer algorithms, the goal is to
generate fluid motion between keyframes.
