Course - B. Tech Branch – Mech Engg Sem – 4th
Subject: KINEMATICS OF MACHINE - B037415(037)
Duration: 1:30 hrs Max. Marks: 40 Min passing marks – 14
Note: -Attempt all questions. Part (a) of each question is compulsory and carries 4 marks. Levels of
Attempt any 2 parts from (b), (c) and (d) carries 8 marks each. Bloom’s CO
Taxonomy.

Question 1

(a) Define Kinematic link, Kinematic pair. Explain classifications of Kinematic pair. Un CO1

(b) Explain any two kinematic inversions of 4bar mechanism. Re CO1

In a mechanism shown in figure the angular velocity
of the crank OA is 15 rad/s and the slider at E is
constrained to move at 2.5 m/s. The motion of both
the sliders is vertical and the link BC is horizontal
(c) in the position shown. Determine: Apply CO1
(i) The rubbing velocity at B if the pin
diameter is 15 mm.
(ii) The velocity of slider D.

For the position of the mechanism shown in figure,

find the velocity of the slider B for the given
configuration. If the velocity of the slider A is 3
(d) Apply CO1
m/sec. length of link AB is 450mm.

Question 2
(a) Explain with sketches the different types of followers Un CO3
Define the following for radial cams (i) Base circle (ii) Trace point (iii) pressure angle
(b) (iv) pitch circle (v) prime circle (vi) pitch curve Re CO3

Draw the profile of a cam operating a knife-edge follower having a lift of 30 mm. The
cam raises the follower with SHM for 1500 of the rotation followed by a period of dwell
for 600. The follower descends for the next 1000 rotation of the cam with uniform
(c) Apply CO3
velocity again followed by a dwell period. The cam rotates at 120 rpm and has a least
radius of 20 mm. What will be the maximum velocity and acceleration of follower during
the lift and return.
Cam with 30 mm as minimum diameter is rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 1200
rpm and has to give the motion to the roller follower 10 mm diameter as defined below:
(i) Follower to complete outward stroke of 25 mm during 120° of cam rotation with
equal uniform acceleration and retardation.
(ii) Follower to dwell for 60º of cam rotation.
(d) (iii) Follower to return to its initial position during 90º of cam rotation with equal Apply CO3
uniform acceleration and retardation.
(iv) Follower to dwell for the remaining 90º of cam rotation.
Layout the cam profile when the roller follower axis passes through the axis of the cam.
Determine the uniform acceleration of the follower on the outstroke and the return stroke,
and also the maximum velocity of the follower during outstroke and the return stroke.
