load of 12200 kg/hr. The quality of steam at turbine exhaust is 0.86. The condenser
pressure is 0.08 bar. Sea water used for circulation is at 2.20C. The terminal
temperature difference between the steam and outgoing water is 580C. The circulating

water velocity is maintained at 1.7 m/s. The condenser tubes are of 14 mm ID and
1.24 mm thickness. Determine
i) The rate of flow of cooling water

4. The annulus of a double-pipe heat exchanger has an inner diameter of 36.6 and an outer
diameter of 59.7 mm. What is the heat transfer coefficient for water at 360C and
atmospheric pressure following in the annulus at a velocity of 2.71 m/s? What would be
the effective heat transfer coefficient if the inner tube had 24 m longitudinal carbon
steel fins of height 10.1 mm and thickness 0.81 mm attached to it? Calculate the
enhancement for the same flow rate. Also calculate the pressure drop per unit length of
heat exchanger, with and without the fins. [10]

b) Dry steam at 1020C condenses on the outside surface of a horizontal pipe of 30 cm

11. A small-size cooling tower is designed to cool 5.5 liters of water per second, the inlet

tower and the power absorbed is 4.75 kW. The air entering the tower is at 180C, and has
a relative humidity of 60%. The air leaving the tower can be assumed to be saturated
and its temperature is 260C. Calculate: (a) The amount of cooling water (make-up)
required for second. (b) The final temperature of the water. Assume that the pressure
remains constant throughout the tower at 1.013 bar. [5+5]
