Class XII
Chapter 1: Electric Charges and Field

1. (a) A force is acting between two charges placed some distance apart in vacuum. If a brass rod is placed
between these two charges, how does the force change?
(b) How will the radius of a flexible ring change if it is given positive charge?
(c) Rubber tyres of aircraft are made slightly conducting. Why?
2. Two point charges +4e and +e are at a distance d apart. What should be the sign of a third point charge q to
be placed between them so that
(a) q is in equilibrium
(b) the entire system is in equilibrium
3. Three point charges +2μC, -3μC and -3μC are kept at the vertices A, B and C respectively of an equilateral
triangle of side 20cm. What should be the sign and magnitude of charge to be placed at the mid point M of
the side BC so that the charge at A remains in equilibrium? [3.9 μC]
4. Two similar metallic spheres, each of weight 1gm are suspended from a point by silk threads each 10cm
long. The spheres are equally charged and repel each other to a distance of 10cm. Find the charge on each
sphere.
5. Two point charges q1 = +0.2 C and q2 = +0.4 C are placed 0.1 m apart. Calculate the electric field at
a) midpoint between the charges
b) a point on the line joining the charges q1 and q2 such that it is 0.05 m away from q2 and 0.15 m from q1.
[ a) E = 7.2 x 1011 N/C, b) 1.53 x 1012 N/C]
6. Two long thin wires AB and CD have linear charge densities 10µC and -20µC respectively. They are kept
parallel to each other at a distance of 1 m. Find magnitude and direction of the net electric field at a point
midway between them. [1.08 x 106 N/C]
7. Determine the electric flux through each face of the cube in each of the following cases due to the point
charge q situated as shown.
q q

(i) (ii) (iii)

Also calculate the flux through each face of the cube in each of the three cases.
8. In the given figure, electric field is along X axis and is given by Ex=
20Ax2 + B, where E is in N/C and x is in m. A and B are constants with
values 10 NC-1m-1 and B = 5 NC-1m-1. Calculate the net electric flux
through the cube and find the value of charge enclosed in it.
