Ans 1

The document explains the concepts of force and pressure, detailing how forces like friction, air resistance, and gravity affect the motion of objects. It also discusses the disadvantages of friction in machines and defines pressure as the force applied per unit area, with its calculation and unit. Additionally, it provides examples of forces acting at a distance and practical applications of pressure, such as a coaster sticking to a glass of water.

FORCE AND PRESSURE

Ans1.When we want to change the speed or direction of a moving

body, we need to apply a force to it.

Ans2: A moving ball comes to rest because forces are acting on it, even
if we don’t see them directly.

The main forces that cause it to stop are:

1. Friction – between the ball and the surface (like the ground). This
force opposes motion.
2. Air resistance – the force of air pushing against the ball as it
moves.

Ans3.A ball thrown up into the air falls back to the ground because of
gravity.

Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward the center of the Earth.
When you throw a ball upward:

 It slows down as it goes up because gravity pulls it downward,

opposite to its motion.
 At the highest point, its upward speed becomes zero.
 Then, gravity pulls it back down, and the ball accelerates
downward until it hits the ground.

This is an example of how a constant force (gravity) can change the

speed and direction of motion.

Ans.4.Here are three types of forces that can act from a distance
(without direct contact):

1. Gravitational Force – The force of attraction between any two

masses (e.g., Earth pulling objects downward).
2. Magnetic Force – The force between magnetic objects (e.g., a
magnet attracting iron).
3. Electrostatic Force – The force between charged objects (e.g., a
balloon rubbed on hair attracting small paper pieces).

Ans5. Here are three disadvantages of friction between parts of a

machine:

1. Wear and Tear – Friction causes surfaces to rub against each

other, leading to gradual damage and wearing out of machine parts.
2. Energy Loss – Friction converts useful energy into heat, reducing
the overall efficiency of the machine.
3. Overheating – Continuous friction can generate excessive heat,
which may damage components or require cooling systems.

Ans6. Pressure is the force applied per unit area on a surface.

It tells us how much force is acting on a specific area and is calculated

using the formula:

Pressure=Force/Area

The SI unit of pressure is the Pascal (Pa).

Ans7. The cutting edge of a knife is made sharp to increase pressure

and make cutting easier.

Ans8. A coaster placed over the rim of a glass of water sticks even
when you invert it because of atmospheric pressure. The pressure
exerted by the air on the card from below is greater than the
weight of the water trying to push down, thus preventing the water
from falling.
