Synopsis
In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international
celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted
them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true
story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she
fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer,
Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that
the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the
terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on,
however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium
Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her
campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, Radium
Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece for 9 to 10 actors,
who play more than 30 parts—friends, co-workers, lovers, relatives,
attorneys, scientists, consumer advocates, and myriad interested
bystanders. Called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium
Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions
with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science. –Taken from
the Dramatic Publishing website.

theatre classes. Cold reads will also be available and you will read in
addition to performing your monologue.

What Mr. Marshall is looking for…

Radium Girls is a dramatic piece about people in a serious situation being
pulled in a lot of different directions. Read through the script and your cold
read and ask yourself what your character wants, how (s)he’s trying to get
it, and what’s in her/his way. Make strong choices and bring good energy.
Break a leg!

Rehearsal Commitment/ Attendance Policy

Actors are required to be at all rehearsals you are called for. It is nearly
impossible to rehearse with even one person missing. Generally rehearsals
are every day after school until 4:30. As we get closer to the performances,
rehearsals will go later.

***Performances are March 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th, & 18th. Actors
must also be at all performances... NO EXCEPTIONS!

***Strike for Radium Girls will be on Monday, March 20th from 2:15pm until
we are finished. All actors and crew members are expected to attend strike
until dismissed.

You will be allowed a maximum of 1 unexcused absence/ 2 tardies

during the rehearsal run of a play. Unexcused absences at a
performance will result in not being able to audition for the next play. If
the student isn’t able to uphold their commitment, they will forfeit
their part. A complete rehearsal schedule will be issued to each student
involved in the play on the first day of rehearsals. Changes to the rehearsal
schedule will be made as far in advance as possible and sent to all parents
via email. There will be Saturday calls.

Your Responsibility
Your cast mates will be relying on you so take care of all appointments and
other business before rehearsals start. It is the student’s and their family’s
responsibility to uphold this commitment so please plan ahead and voice
any concerns to Mr. Marshall. This has been an issue in the past which
hurts the quality of the production. Please take it upon yourself to be
proactive and not allow this to continue to affect rehearsals.

ASB Cards
It is required that all students who are involved with an ASB function must
hold a valid ASB card or obtain an ASB waiver. Radium Girls is an ASB
function and therefore will require that you have an ASB card. If you are
cast you will have to purchase an ASB card or get the ASB waiver.
Talk to Mr. Marshall about the waiver if you think you may be
eligible.
Final Note from Mr. Marshall
If you are not cast do not be discouraged from auditioning for the improv
team, Summer Shove Off, or any other productions we might put on. Also,
there are still many other areas you can be involved in with Radium Girls.
We will need students for tech, and joining Theatre Society is another way
you can stay involved. Break a leg!!!
