TUTORIAL Design of Flexible Machine Elements (Belt Drives)

This document outlines a tutorial for ME4202 - Mechanical Engineering Design, focusing on the design of flexible machine elements, specifically belt drives. It includes instructions for answering questions, as well as three problems related to calculating load, tensile stress, belt tensions, and specifications for a V-belt drive. The tutorial is designed for a duration of 2 hours and requires students to show their working for full marks.

ME4202 – MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN

TUTORIAL: DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE MACHINE ELEMENTS (BELT DRIVES)
DURATION: 2 Hours

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Answer all questions.
2. Write in blue or black pen only except for diagram, where students are allowed to use pencil.
3. To obtain full marks in calculation, working must be shown and answer must be indicated
clearly with the correct unit.

1) A 120 mm wide and 5 mm thick flat belt transfers power from a 250 mm diameter driving
pulley to a 700 mm diameter driven pulley. The belt has a mass per length of 2.10 kg/m and
a coefficient of friction 0f 0.3. The input power of the belt drive is 60 kW at 1000 rpm. The
center distance is 3.50 m. Determine:

a) The load per each pulley on the axis

b) The maximum tensile stress in the belt

2) A flat belt is 150 mm wide and 8.50 mm thick, and transmits 11.2 kW. The center distance of
the two pulleys is 2.44 m. The driving pulley is 150 mm in diameter and rotates at 2000 rpm
such that the loose side of the belt is on top. The driven pulley is 450 mm in diameter. The
belt density, is 970 kg/m3. Determine the following:

a) The belt tensions, F1 and F2 if μ=0.3

b) If μ is reduced to 0.20 because oil getting on
part of the pulley, what are the new belt
tensions, F1 and F2? Would the belt slip?
c) Belt length, L

3) It is required to select a V-belt drive for 4 kW normal torque A.C. motor, which runs at 1500
rpm to a light duty compressor running at 1000 rpm. The compressor runs for 24 hours per
day. Space is available for a center distance of about 500 mm. Given that the pitch diameter
of driving pulley is 100 mm. Determine the following:

a) The diameter of pulleys

b) The correct center distance
c) The number of belts and hence give the specifications of the belt
