5020 F24 hw05

This document outlines the homework assignment for MCEN 5020 due on October 4, 2024, requiring clear derivations and sources for external formulas. It includes problems related to spring dynamics, Laplace transforms, and ordinary differential equations (ODEs), with specific instructions for presenting solutions in a single PDF. Students must demonstrate their understanding by showing all steps in their calculations and producing relevant plots.

MCEN 5020, Fall 2024

Homework due 6 pm 10/04 by upload to Canvas

Last modified September 24, 2024.

In your solutions, please provide clear step-by-step derivations of your equations, and provide sources for
any external formulas (such as integral tables, etc.) and copies of any numerical codes you used. Incorporate
all material into a single pdf file that can be easily uploaded to Canvas. Also, for Laplace and inverse Laplace
transforms, please show all steps. For example, if the question were to ask “Find the Laplace transform of
t2 e−3t ” a complete answer would be:

g(t) = t2 e−3t = f (t)e−3t

L(g(t)) = F (s + 3) using s-shifting where F (s) = L(t2 )
2 n!
F (s) = using L(tn ) = n+1
s3 s
2
thus L(g(t)) =
(s + 3)3
2
and just saying (s+3)3
will not earn full credit.

1. [10 pts] An object is attached to a spring. The object at rest stretches the spring 0.5 m from its unloaded
position. It is then displaced an additional 0.1 m downward and given a velocity of 4 m/s downward.
There is no damping in the system and a forcing function of the form

r(t) = 5 sin(ωt)

is applied to the object, which has a mass of 3.0 kg. The forcing is designed to exhibit resonance. Find
the displacement at any time t, and make a plot of the solution for t = 0 to 10 s.

2. [10 pts] Modify the system from the previous problem by adding a damper. The damping force is
linearly proportional to the object’s velocity and designed such that, for example, when the velocity is
1 m/s, the damper exerts a force of 35 Newtons. Find a new equation for the displacement as a function
of time, and plot your solution from t = 0 to 10 s.

3. [5 pts] Find the Laplace transform of the following

(a) (3 − 4t)2
1
e3t − e−5t

(b) 2
(c) ke−αt cos(ωt)

4. [5 pts] A useful Laplace transform is

L(tf (t)) = −F 0 (s)

(a) Derive this by taking the derivative with respect to s of both sides of the definition of L(f (t)).
(b) Based on your derivation, infer a transform for tn f (t) and apply it to find L(t2 sin(2t)).

5. [10 pts] Find the inverse Laplace transform of the following

1
6
(a) (s+1)3
4
(b) s2 −2s−3
5(s+k)+2π
(c) (s+k)2 +π 2

6. [10 pts] Solve the following ODEs using Laplace transform

(a) y 00 − 6y 0 + 5y = 29 cos 2t, y(0) = 3.2, y 0 (0) = 6.2

(b) y 00 + 2y 0 + 5y = 50t, y(0) = −4, y 0 (0) = 14
