General introduction

Documentation with the control computer

The documentation consists of the following manuals:
• User's manual
The user's manual is intended for the end user. This manual only covers working with the control
computer after installation.
• Installer's manual
The installer's manual is intended for the installer, and concerns the connection and configuration of
the control computer
• Operation and safety instructions
These subjects are covered in a separate manual. This manual also applies to other control
computers in the Fancom F2000-line. Always read the safety instructions and warnings carefully
before using the control computer.

Always keep this manual close to the control computer

How to use this manual

The lay out of this manual has been kept as simple as possible. Symbols have been used in this manual
to clarify certain special features.

Fancom uses the following symbols in this manual:

Suggestions, advice and remarks with additional information.

Warning indicating damage to the product if procedures are not carefully observed.

Warning indicating life threatening situation if procedures are not carefully observed.

Example: Title…
Each example has a grey title bar, such as above. The end of the example is indicated by a grey
line. The normal description then continues.

Formulas are shown in a grey bar.

How to carry out a procedure:

Each procedure begins with a separate heading (see example above) and consists of a numbered list.
1. A procedure usually begins with a reference to a menu option. Press the softkey next to the
required menu option. Usually a tab page must then be selected by pressing the softkey under the
tab page.
2. Follow the other steps in the procedure.
3. Names of fields, boxes, menu options, etc. are always in italics.
Operation of the control computer is explained in a separate chapter.
System settings are sometime referred to, for example the system setting Heating in house SETUP,
tab page Inside. First access the system menu in this case. All other settings can be accessed using the
user's menu.

FAQs
Certain aspects are treated as questions and answers. The FAQs usually concern special situations.

Decimals
This manual uses a decimal point in values.
For example: a weight of 1 500 gram is shown as 1.500 kg (not as 1,500 kg). The control computer also
uses the decimal point.

Enter the following per position:
Position % The ventilation percentage at which fans should activate/deactivate and
air/tunnel inlets open/close. The ventilation percentages must increase from the
lowest to the highest position.

Control % / The setting depends on system setting M/MT-part in HOUSE SETUP, tab page
Modul. % Combi:
• Linear (Control %)
Enter the position of the linear controllable part.
• RELAY (Modul. %)
Enter a ventilation percentage. The control computer uses this percentage
to calculate the on and off times for modulating fans.
If two successive positions have the same value, the control computer cannot
calculate the values in-between (position-control).

Extra controllable

Pressure Setting of the required pressure for all positions used. A rule of thumb: the
higher the ventilation position, the lower the required pressure. Enter 0 to
deactivate pressure control.

3.2.2 Combi-table T-PHASE (tunnel)

The settings that have to be made for the tunnel part (T-part) correspond broadly with the settings for
the MT-part. Instead of the ventilation position in % now enter the offset temperature for the positions.
With the first position this offset temperature is linked to Start temperature ventilation + Calculated

3.3 Ventilation settings

The control computer can control the fans modulating. With modulating control Fancom means a control
(linear or relay) that is only activated for a certain part of the total cycle time. Using modulating control
it is possible to achieve minimum ventilation with a large fan.
Fancom differentiates between the following types of modulating control:
• Modulating control with fixed modulation times
• Modulating control with optimised modulation times
• Rotating modulation

These types are explained in the next sections. This explanation is also important with linear controlled
fans.
Linear controlled fans have a minimum ventilation level, for example 30%. This determines at what
percentage the ventilation will modulate, and the ventilation level during modulating. If, e.g. the
calculated output of the linear part is 10%, ventilation will run 10/30th of the cycle time at 30%, and be
deactivated the rest of the time.

3.3.1 Modulating control with fixed modulation times

With this type of control enter the fixed cycle time (ON plus OFF time). The total cycle appears as
follows:

1st cycle 2ndcycle

ON

OFF

ON time OFF time

Cycle time

Example modulating control with fixed ON-time

Cycle time 10 minutes

15
A5911492 - GB010308
F37 Climate computer Installer

Modulating below% 30%

Control value ventilation 15%
If control value ventilation is lower than 30%, the control computer will apply modulating
ventilation. The controllable part will be active for half of the cycle time of 10 minutes at a
ventilation level of 30%. This means a 5-minute ON time and a 5-minute OFF time. The control
computer will always observe these times.

3.3.2 Modulating control with optimised modulation times

With optimal modulating control the control computer aims for an optimal ON-time and an optimal OFF-
time entered by the installer. The table below shows that deactivation and cycle time can vary:

1st cycle 2nd cycle

ON

OFF

ON time OFF time

Maximum cycle time

Example- Optimal modulating control (1)

Optimal ON time: 2 minutes
Maximum cycle time: 10 minutes
Modulating below% 30%
Control value ventilation 15%
If control value ventilation is lower than 30%, the control computer will apply modulating
ventilation. The control computer assumes an optimal ON time of 2 minutes at a ventilation level of
30%. This means that the optimal ON time of 2 minutes must be half the total cycle time. The
control computer calculates a cycle time of 2 x 2 = 4 minutes (2 minutes on and 2 minutes off). The
OFF time is this example will also be 2 minutes.

Example- Optimal modulating control (2)

Modulating below% 30%
Control value ventilation 3%
The control computer assumes an optimal ON time of 2 minutes. This means that the optimal ON
time of 2 minutes must be one tenth ( = 3/30) of the total cycle time. The control computer
calculates a cycle time of 10 x 2 minutes = 20 minutes (2 minutes on and 18 minutes off). This is
however longer than the maximum cycle time of 10 minutes.
Based on the maximum cycle time the control computer will now calculate a new division of the ON
and OFF times: 10% of 10 minutes means an ON time of 1 minute. Control must be off for the rest
of the time.

The following figures show the progress of house temperature with the two modulating control types.
With control based on fixed time large temperature fluctuations occur, while the average house
temperature remains identical in both examples.

3.3.3 Rotating modulation

The fans that activate at a certain ventilation position have been set in the relay table. However, this
means that the same fans are always active. This can create a less optimal spread of air in the house
and at the same time overload certain fans.
Prevent this by rotating the fans. The control computer will activate the number of fans assigned, but in
a certain rotational order.

Rotating is impossible if all combi-relays (assigned for rotation) are activated.

Fancom will explain how to rotate a combi relay based on an example:

17
A5911492 - GB010308
F37 Climate computer Installer

Example- Rotating a combi relay

The figure below shows a practical example. The four corner fans ensure minimum ventilation.
3 4

3 4

1 2

1 2
The control computer calculates that the fans assigned to combi relays 1 and 2 run:

Combi relay 1 2 3 4
Calculated position

The disadvantage is that only fans 1 and 2 will run (with minimum ventilation). This could mean a
bad air spread throughout the house.
To ensure optimal circulation, the combi relay assigned to corner fans 1 thru 4 is set to rotate. After
each cycle time the control computer will shift the two active combi relays up one position.

Combi relay 1 2 3 4

Start

After modulation cycle 1

After modulation cycle 2

After modulation cycle 3

After modulation cycle 4

… … … … …

This means that different fans run after each cycle time.

If rotating modulation is not used, a fixed rotation time can be set.

3.5 Heating
The control computer has various heating controls that can be assigned independently.
Enter to which analog inputs the temperature sensor(s) have been connected and to which outputs the
heating controls have been assigned. Also if the Half House Brooding (H) option is activated.
If the temperature sensors have not been assigned, the control computer will use the house
temperature. Also enter the type of control: RELAY or ANALOG.
The type of control depends on the heating system used. For blowers or a heating block ON/OFF control
is used for example; for brooders or nest heating the analog control. If the heating has a LOW/HIGH/OFF
control (SBM brooder) a BCU can be used. This will convert the analog signal into the corresponding
LOW/HIGH level.

3.5.1 ON/OFF control

Heating activates when the temperature of the heating control is lower than Setpoint - Hysteresis.
On condition that the Half House Brooding
(HHB) option is deactivated or that the heating
controls active during HHB. ONON
Heating deactivates when the temperature is
equal to or higher than the Setpoint.
Use a Repeat time to prevent unnecessary
activation/deactivation of the heating. When OFF
OFF
the heating activates, it will remain on for the
at least the Repeat time. When the heating Setpoint - Hysteresis Setpoint
deactivates, it will remain off for a minimum of
this time.

3.5.2 Time modulating ON/OFF control

Heating is continually on, if the temperature of the heating control is lower than Setpoint - Hysteresis.
On condition that the Half House Brooding (HHB) option is deactivated or that the heating controls active
during HHB.
Heating is continually off, if the temperature of the heating control is equal to or higher than the
Setpoint.
Heating is Modulating on, if the temperature is in the Hysteresis.

Example: Time modulating heating control

Inside Hysteresis the control computer controls heating during a part of the Repeat time. The control
computer calculates this on/off time as follows:
Setpoint 20.0 °C
Measured house temperature 19.6 °C
Hysteresis 1.0 °C
Repeat time 100 sec.
The heating relay will be repeatedly on for 40 seconds and off for 60 seconds.

3.5.3 Analog control

As long as the measured house temperature is lower than Control value P-band the control computer will
output the maximum control signal.
On condition that the Half House Brooding (HHB) option is deactivated or that the heating controls active
during HHB.
Use Repeat type to determine the type of heating control. If the Repeat time is less than 10 seconds, P-
band control is involved. In other cases PI-control applies.

Enter the P-band in the user's settings in Main menu More tab page Settings. The
computer can also calculate the P-band. It uses the following formula:

P-band (oC) = (100% - Minimum setting) / Correction factor % per 1 oC

P-Band control
If the temperature is higher than the Control
value, heating is on the minimum position.
If the temperature is between the Control value
100
and Control value P-band, heating will be at a
position between minimum and 100%, depending
on the difference.
Min
On condition that the Half House Brooding (HHB)
option is deactivated or that the heating controls
active during HHB. Control value Control value
P-band

PI control
If the temperature is lower than the Control value, the control computer will control the heating directly
based on the temperature difference. As long as the temperature is too low, the heating will go to an
increasingly higher position (max. 100%). The increase/decrease speed depends on the time set by the
user (usually between 100 and 600 seconds).

3.6 OptiSec-
(Optisec = Optimale Setpoint Control)
The control computer uses a neutral zone, with minimum ventilation and no heating. This lowers energy
costs. The neutral zone is the area between control value heating and start temperature ventilation. If
OptiSec is not used, control value heating is lower than setpoint house temperature. With very young
animals the actual house temperature can be lower than the setpoint house temperature.
Hysteresis

Figure 3-1: OptiSec is not used. The setpoint heating is lower than setpoint house temperature.
OptiSec brings the control value heating closer to the setpoint house temperature, if the actual house
temperature is lower than setpoint house temperature. This means the heating will activate earlier and
the difference between the actual and required house temperature will be smaller.
The control computer regularly controls the house temperature. If this is below the setpoint house
temperature, the offset heating will be gradually lowered. At the same time it increases the Offset start
ventilation. This shifts the neutral zone.

The control computer can decrease the offset setpoint heating until this equals the setpoint house
temperature. The maximum correction can be limited using Band, tab page OptiSec.
If the actual house temperature rises above the setpoint house temperature, the OptiSec-correction will
be gradually decreased. This means that setpoint house temperature and Start temperature ventilation
will return to their original settings. These setpoints will not drop any further. The control computer does
not use the OptiSec-setting in the reverse - the offset Start temperature ventilation will not be decreased
further than the original value.

Use Wait time to minimize the influence of temperature fluctuations. Use the Incr/Decr. time to
determine how long it takes before the OptiSec correction has been completely decreased/increased. For

3.7 Cooling
The control computer can be used to control a cooling unit. Enter to which analog inputs the temperature

The type of control depends on the cooling system. For a cooling system with high pressure nozzles for
example use ON/OFF control. With evaporative cooling (pad-cooling) use a time modulating ON/OFF
control because of the higher capacity of the cooling.

Setpoint Setpoint +
minimum of this time.
Hysteresis

3.7.2 Time modulating ON/OFF control

Cooling is continually on, if the temperature of the cooling control is higher than Setpoint + Hysteresis.
Cooling is continually off, if the temperature is equal to or lower than the Setpoint.
Cooling is modulating on, if the temperature is in the Hysteresis. The control computer calculates the
modulation time based on the Repeat time.
With evaporative cooling the Max. RH-limit with evaporative cooling can be used. This influence is
explained in the user's manual.

Example: Time modulating cooling control

Inside Hysteresis the control computer controls the cooling for a part of the Repeat time. The control
computer calculates this on/off time as follows:
Setpoint 27,0°C
Measured house temperature 28.5°C
Hysteresis 3.0°C
Repeat time 100 sec.
The cooling relay will be repeatedly on for 50 seconds and off for 50 seconds.

3.7.3 Analog control

As long as the measured house temperature is higher than Control value + P band the control computer
will output the maximum control signal. On condition that the Half House Brooding (HHB) option is
deactivated. Repeat time is used to set the type of cooling control. If the Repeat time is less than 10
seconds, a P-band control is concerned. In other cases PI-control applies.
The P band is a user setting:

Main menu tab page Settings The P-band can also be calculated by the computer
using the following formula:

P-band (oC) = (100% - Minimum setting) / correction factor % per 1 oC

P-Band control
100
If the temperature is lower than the Control value,
cooling is on the minimum position.
If the temperature is between the Control value
and Control value +P band, cooling will be at a Min
position between minimum and 100%, depending
on the difference. Control Control value
On condition that the Half House Brooding (HHB) value P-band
option is deactivated.

PI control
If the temperature is lower than the Control value, the control computer will control the heating directly
based on the temperature difference. As long as the temperature is too high, the cooling will go to an
increasingly higher position (max. 100%). The increase/decrease speed depends on the time set by the
user (usually between 100 and 600 seconds).

With a MODULATING control this is the switch range of the relay control.

Repeat time With ON/OFF control this is the minimum time the relay is active/inactive. With a
MODULATING control the control computer calculates the modulating time from
this time.

Max. buffer The control computer repeatedly determines the difference between the actual
setpoint and the required setpoint. It places these difference values in a buffer,
until the Max. buffer is reached. It then calculates the average difference and
new setpoint.

Actual value The actual output.

3.8.1 ON/OFF control

Humidity activates as soon as humidity in the house drops below Setpoint humidity – Hysteresis.
Humidity deactivates when the measured
house humidity is equal to or higher than
Setpoint humidity. ON
A Repeat time can be used to avoid
unnecessary activation/deactivation of the
humidity. When humidity activates it will
remain on for the Repeat time. When the
humidity deactivates, it will remain off for at OFF

7.4 Setting the terminal resistor

Use of the terminal resistor depends on the location of the control computer in the FNet or IO-network.
Looped control computers do not need a terminal resistor.
Control computers at the beginning or end of the network do need a terminal resistor. Depending on the
device type a 120 Ohm resistance or a jumper or dipswitch is used to terminate the control computer.
This is explained using a few examples.
Example: Setting the terminal resistor FNet

Example: Setting the terminal resistor FNet

1 2 3 4

Figure 7-3: example FNet.

Control computers 1 and 4 are at the end of the network. These computers must be terminated
resistor.
Control computers 2 and 3 are looped. These looped computers do not need to be terminated.

Example: Setting terminal resistor IO-net (1)

In the example below is a control computer, linked to two FRM.16-units via an I/O network.

IRM-16 IRM-16

Figure 7-4: Example IO-net.

The control computer is located between the two IRM.16 units. This control computer must not be
terminated.
Both IRM.16s are at the end of the network. These computers must be terminated.

Example: Setting terminal resistor IO-net (2)

In the example below is a control computer, linked to one IRM.16 unit via an IO-network. This
IRM.16 unit is linked to a second IRM.16 unit.

IRM-16 IRM-16

Figure 7-5: Example IO-net.

The control computer and the second IRM.16 unit are at the end of the network.
Both must be terminated.
The first IRM.16 unit is looped. Do not terminate this unit.
