1. Application software: These are computer software used to perform a specific task on a
computer

Example of specific task

1. Designing- Ms Publisher, Photoshop, illustrator


2. Typing- Ms Word
3. Playing music- Music player
4. Playing videos- Video player
5. Presentation- Ms power point
6. Storing Records- Ms access

2. System software- Computer software used to run and manage computer resources
Computer resources include: People (users), other software, Computer hardware

Categorization of system software: Operating system, BIOS, Utility software

1. Operating system- Computer software that acts as an interface between computer


hardware and computer user. Examples of operatiog system: Android-Smart phones,
MS Windows-Desktop computers

Software used to perform tasks of a daily routine

Backup software

Disk defragmenter- Manage the disk

BOOTING A COMPUTER

Booting-Refers to powering on a computer.

Types of computer booting

1. Cold booting-Powering on a computer that was completely off.


2. Warm booting/Restarting- Refers to powering off a computer and then powering it on
again at the same time

Reasons for warm booting

1. If it is not responding (hanging)


2. After installation of a new software

PROCEDURE FOR POWERING ON A COMPUTER

1. Ensure that all the cables are well connected, power cables etc
2. Ensure that the main switch is turned on.
3. Press on the power button on the CPU
4. Press on the power button on the monitor
5. Feed in the security credentials

PROCEDURE OF POWERING OFF A COMPUTER

1. Close all the running applications e.g word, word


2. Save all the unsaved work
3. On the start Menu select power and the shut down option
4. Power off the main switch

CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS

Computers vary in: use, size, capability among others. Thus computers needs to
be classified differently

1. Classification by size- Super computers, Micro-computers, Mini-computers


2. Classification by purpose- General purpose computer, Dedicated computers, special
purpose computers
3. Classification by functionality- Digital computers, Analog computer
