Lesson 1

Saeed spends his holiday in study

I am Saeed Ahmad. I was on school holiday, so I asked my dad’s

permission to go to the house of my friend Muhammad, to study. Dad
said: “You can go, but you should take all the required stationery
(writing tools) with you as well as the books. You should study with
your friend and you should not play much. The exam is near. You
should also take some pastry and sandwiches and you can share them
with your friend, Muhammad”. Mom said: “I prepared some pastry
and cakes for you, would you take a bottle of water too?” Saeed
replied: “No, mom. I will not take water or food. There is clean cold
water at Muhammad’s house. They have a big refrigerator. I will only
take the cheese pastry because Muhammad likes it, other things are
not necessary as Muhammad’s mother brings us much food during
study hours and after. Moreover, taking food will hurt them. They are
good people and they like guests.”

While I was on the way heading to Muhammad’s house, I met Nabil.

Nabil said: “Where are you going, Saeed? I am going to your house to
study with you.” I said: “You are late, you have not told me earlier. It’s
ok. Why don’t you come with me? We will go together to
Muhammad’s house.” Nabil said: “Who is Muhammad?” I said: “He is
my friend. Don’t you know him? He is in grade eight. Muhammad is a
intelligent boy. He will help us to understand the lessons and he will
answer the hard questions for us. He will welcome you (in sha’ Allah).
He is my best friend.” Nabil said: “I agree with you. I remembered
now, he is that tall boy who can play football well.” I said: “Yes.” Nabil

Page 2 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
said: “I know him well and he also knows me. It’s ok, let’s go to his
house.”

Saeed and Nabil headed to the house of Muhammad. Muhammad

was waiting for Saeed. Muhammad was glad to see Saeed and he
welcomed both Saeed and Nabil. All went to the study room of
Muhammad after greeting Muhammad’s parents. They studied for
about two hours, Muhammad’s mother brought for them sweet, fruit,
yogurt and other things.

After that, they played in the house garden for a short time. Then,
both Saeed and Nabil went back to their houses.

Lesson 2

School Library

This is my school. It is one of the biggest schools in the city. It is

located in the middle of the city. It has a big library where there are a
lot of essential and useful books for teachers and students. Students
go there at their library hour, they sit on the chairs at the tables in the
readers’ hall (room) to read books, newspapers and magazines.

Some students get the books, newspapers and magazines from

shelves, read them and return them after reading. Others stand
beside the shelves browsing. Students take the required books to the
library assistant (librarian) who lends them the books in return for
library cards (borrowing cards) or identity cards. If students want to
take books home, they have to borrow them in return for the cards

Page 3 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
issued by the library. They have to bring the books back within a week
and in case they do not return them at the due date they have to pay
fine.

Once, one of my classmate did not return a book. Firstly, the library
manager warned him and told him to bring back the book tomorrow.
He looked for the book in his bag, also at home but he did not find it.
Five days passed searching for the book then he was supposed to pay
five rupees for each day. The amount of money was large for the
student so the case was referred to the headmaster who exempted
him from paying the fine.

On the other hand, teachers go to the library at their free hours to

read newspapers and magazines. They borrow books in return for
library cards. They are allowed to keep the books for two weeks and
they do not pay a fine for delay.

Lesson 3

School’s Establishment Day

This is a school in which there are teachers, students, library,

classrooms, big field for playing and a lab. The school conducts/holds
some sport and cultural activities from time to time.

Every year, on the twenty ninth of October, the day of school’s

establishment, the school holds a nice program. For this time also, the
hall had been cleaned and a high large stage had been set. Students
and teachers started getting to the hall since the morning. Students
sat at their respective places. Meanwhile, guests sat at the front seats
designated for them. At about 10 am, the principal arrived and
delivered a speech in which he mentioned the achievements of the
school and the history of its establishment.

After that, cultural activities began. A female student came to the

stage and sung some verses in a beautiful sweet voice. Then, a male
student from grade five recited a poem in his singsong voice. Later,
some boys wearing long overcoats with shining colors appeared, they
performed an interesting play and after that the anchor (presenter of
the programme) called a group of female students to come to the
stage. They sang in tune with music. The party lasted until the
evening. Finally, the principal thanked all the guests and audience and
he invited them to the restaurant/cafeteria to have dinner.

Lesson 5

At the exam hall

Shankar and Shyam study at the same school and they are in the same
class. At school, the internal exam takes place every month. Students
are accustomed to having the exam every month. Shankar and Shyam
entered the exam hall and had their seats waiting for the exam’s
papers.

The teacher came to the hall and distributed the papers. Students
read the questions quietly and calmly. They made sure that all the
questions are from the (approved) curriculum. Shankar said: Shyam!
The questions are very easy as if the book is open in front of me. I will
finish the exam quickly.

Shyam said: Yes, Shankar, the answers are revolving in my mind too,
but the time is short (not long enough). Shankar and Shyam started
writing all the answers but they could not answer one question as the
time was not enough. The teacher said: The questions could be long
and the time is not enough. Shankar said: Yes, my teacher. I wish the
time was longer. Shyam said: Shankar, no use of talking now. Hurry up
and complete the answers, let’s make useful the time.

Lesson 6

Patna Secondary School

I am a resident of Patna, which is the capital of the State of Bihar. It is

a very old city, there are industries (Industrial facilities), ministries, big
and small offices, colleges, universities and primary and secondary
schools, governmental and private. I studied at a secondary school
called Patna Secondary School providing high level of education. Its
building is big consisted of three floors. There are twenty five rooms
in each floor used for teaching except the ones in the ground floor.
The rooms there are used for administrative purpose except two
rooms, one of them is for entertainment games for girls and the other
one for boys. In addition that, there is a large room for male and
female teachers. There is also another room for the headmaster. They
teach so many literary and scientific subjects besides languages
including foreign languages such as Arabic, French, German and
others. I teach English at this school and this is my friend and
colleague Ahmad, he teaches Arabic. Nowadays, Arabic has become
so popular as the increasing number of the students studying it
indicates. They study it to get a job also for the love of this language
and for religious purposes too. There are currently seven male
teachers and three female teachers teaching Arabic in the school for
hundreds of male and female students. There are over a hundred
students studying Arabic in the twelfth grade. After graduation from
school, they intend to join the University of Patna and specialize in
Arabic to master the language and be able to get job opportunities
with high salaries in the private sector. Some of those specialized in
Arabic language work as translators, written translation and
interpreting. For those wishing to be lecturers at colleges and

Page 9 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
universities, they have to get doctoral degree (PhD) in general. Indians
learn and master foreign languages quickly especially, Arabic. As their
Arabic language level is very high.

will buy what we need on the way and we will eat and drink there.
We went off to wait for a bus at the Red Fort. Mahmoud asked: Which
vehicle would you like to ride, Battery bus or Rickshaw, which looks
like a bike but it has three wheels and it can carry two or more
passengers in addition to the driver who pedals it like a bike. We
reached the Red Fort and waited for a short time until a red bus
arrived, John asked: Which bus is air-conditioned, the red one or the

Shakeel and Hameed are friends. They both live in the same
neighborhood, they study at the same school and they are in the
same class.

Shakeel’s uncle lives in Mumbai with his family and he works in a

finance office holding a senior position, the Managing Director.

On the occasion of Shakeel’s cousin wedding, he had to travel with his

family to Mumbai. At that time he told his friend Hameed: Why don’t
you come with me to Mumbai? We will attend the wedding and we
will have time to walk around the big city which is known for its
industries especially Film industry. We might be lucky to meet some
film stars at the wedding as Muhammad is a senior officer at a finance
office. Both agreed and each asked his parents for permission, both
families agreed. They travelled by the express train. The group
consists of Shakeel’s parents, his little sister and the two friends,
Shakeel and Hameed. The boys sat face to face beside the window
looking out while the train was moving on the railways. They were
talking about what they were seeing on the way. After arriving at the
Mumbai station, the family hired a car and headed to the house of
Shakeel’s uncle.

The family of Shakeel’s uncle were glad to see them. Shakeel

introduced Hameed to the family of his uncle saying he is his friend
and he came here to see Mumbai. One day after the wedding,
Shakeel’s uncle sent a worker/assistant with the boys to show them
around the city and the Film City.

Page 13 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
In the Film City, they were able to meet some movie characters. In the
evening, both went back home and told all about what they had seen.
Two days later, Shakeel, his family and Hameed returned to Delhi.

Lesson 10

In a rainy day

It is the rainy season now. On a working day, it was drizzling in the

early morning. Then the rain gradually got heavier. All the family
members woke up one by one. My grandfather had woken up earlier
than all of us almost at half past four as usual. After praying Fajr (The
morning prayer), he went to the park of our neighborhood as he used
to. He went home earlier than usual. We saw him wet. He is a skinny
old man. We heard him coughing and his nose was running. My
mother rushed towards him saying: Oh father, you have to change
your clothes quickly and I will make some tea with ginger and honey,
without milk. It is better to drink it hot then get some rest. I brought a
new towel and gave it to him. He entered the bathroom and dried his
head and body then he wore new thick clothes. My mother came
carrying the tea tray, she poured the tea in the cup and gave it to the
grandfather. He drank the tea. I was sitting beside him massaging his
hands, head and legs and soon he was asleep in the warm bed.

Regarding my father, he started getting ready to go to his office. He

said: Hey children, get ready fast. The school’s car/vehicle might not
come or might arrive late because the rain has started falling heavily. I
will take you to school by my car while driving to my office.

Page 14 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
Meanwhile, my mother called us from the kitchen saying that the
breakfast is ready on the table. Come to have your breakfast then the
three of you, you, your brother and your sister will go with your
father in his car to school. We all went to the table, after having
breakfast, we took our bags and rode the car with our father. We
found few (male and female) students and (male and female)
teachers gathering below the roofed school yard along with the
headmaster to pray before starting classes.

When we returned from the school, we found the servant alone at

home so we asked her about the others. She said: The grandfather’s
health condition got worse at around ten o’clock. We called your
father at the office to take him to the hospital. All of them are with
him in the hospital now. Meanwhile, the telephone rang, I picked up
the phone and heard my mother’s voice saying: Alhamdulillah (Thanks
God), my father is fine now and we are on the way home. We will
arrive within half an hour insha’llah (if God wills). Have your lunch
and take some rest. We thanked Allah, we love our grandfather too
much and in fact he loves us even more.

Lesson 11

Ahmad and Amani are waiting for friends

Amani: It is nine o’clock now and they have not arrived yet. Are you
sure of the time?

Page 15 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
Ahmad: You were with us and they told me in front of you that they
will be at the restaurant at eight o’clock sharp.

Amani: Then why are they late? I am hungry and tired. We have been
walking for a long time from a market to another.

Ahmad: I am also hungry and tired like you.

Amani: Hey Ahmad, look at that woman wearing a red shirt and a gold
necklace like the one we saw at that jewelry store in the market of
Connaught Place.

Ahmad: Which woman?

Amani: That blond woman who is sitting with that brown young man
in the middle of the restaurant, I think she is a foreigner.

Ahmad: Sorry, dear. I cannot see well without my glasses. I forgot it

on the table in the room.

Amani: Here are your glasses. I brought it for you as I expected that
you will need them.

Ahmad: Now I can see well. Right, it is a beautiful necklace, but it is

not like the one we saw in that store. This one is made of copper.

Amani: Don’t say that. It is made of gold.

Ahmad: Anyway, I forgot where that store was.

Amani: I remember that well. It is at the market of Connaught Place

next to the toys store from where we bought the gifts for the children.

Ahmad: Sorry, I do not remember. Anyhow, talk about what

interested.

Page 16 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
Amani: You only remember the things you are interested in.

Ahmad: And you too only remember the things you are interested in.

Amani: Look, they are coming. We will talk about this matter later.

Ahmad: Where are they?

Amani: Look carefully towards the door, they are standing there.

Ahmad: Yeah, they are looking at us.

Ahmad and Amani waved to them. The friends came to their table
and sat with them exchanging regards and jokes. After a while, all of
them ordered meals and drinks as they like.

Lesson 12

Adil visits a secondary school in Delhi

A friend from Egypt visited me. He works as a teacher at a secondary

school in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. After having rest for two whole
days, he told me: Muhammad, in fact, I came here on a special leave,
but I don’t want to spend all my time relaxing, sightseeing and
watching Indian films. Since I’m a teacher at a secondary school in
Cairo, I would like to visit a secondary school here and meet the (male
and female) teachers, the (male and female) students and the (male
and female) workers. I would like to sit with them, get to know them
and learn about the subjects they teach at your secondary schools.

Page 17 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
I said: Adil, it’s not a big deal, there is a secondary school in this
neighborhood and I was a student at that school. I know the
headmaster, he is a good man and he will welcome us insha’llah (If
God wills), but before the visit I should inform him to make the
necessary preparations to receive you. You would be glad to know
that they also teach Arabic at that school. Muhammad called the
headmaster and he agreed on the visit and it was set on Friday. On
Friday, Muhammad and Adil went to the school at ten o’clock in the
morning. Both reached the school at the designated time and they
found the headmaster waiting for them at his office.

Muhammad introduced Adil to the headmaster saying that this is my

friend Adil from Egypt. The headmaster said: Welcome to our dear
guest. Sir, before embarking on the tour of the school, I’d like to
introduce my colleague, Zainab, to you, she is an Arabic teacher. She
greeted him saying that: and you Sir teach English at your school in
Cairo. I knew that from your personal profile(Bio Data). Zainab spoke
in Arabic and Adel said: You are good in Arabic. Then, the headmaster
went out along with the guest and Muhammad. Zainab stayed at the
office. The headmaster went to the teachers’ room, there were male
and female teachers. The headmaster introduced Joseph, Ahmad and
Sharma to the guest saying that they teach English. Then, he stepped
towards Usha, Anita and Shoji saying that they teach Economics. After
that, he told the guest: Let’s go to the library now. Adil saw three
people standing at the door of the library. He moved closer to them
and said: Who are you? Are you students? They said: No, we work in
the library. I’m Jamil, the librarian. This is Asha and that is Rana, they
are my assistants. Adil saw some girls sitting, he walked towards them
and said: Are you also workers at the library? They said: No, Sir, we

Page 18 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
are students. Adil saw two women standing aside and said: What
about you? Who are you? They said: we help the librarian. After
taking a fast look at the library, the headmaster showed the guest
around the school. He showed him the classes one by one and he
introduced him the teachers and the students. When the tour
finished, the headmaster invited Adil and Muhammad to drink tea
with him in his office.

Lesson 13

At the play Ground

Muhammad, Hamed and Ahmad live at the same residential area in

New Delhi. They study at the same school which is situated near their
residential area. One day during the break, Muhammad looked/seems
sick, he didn’t eat anything. He went to the playing ground of the
school with Hamed and Ahmad. They saw some students playing
football. Hamed and Ahmad joined them but Muhammad didn’t. He
stood aside watching the game and the players. Shortly, Muhammad
fell down unconsciously on the field’s ground. Hameed and Ahmad
carried him to the school’s clinic. Unfortunately, the doctor wasn’t
there at that time. The headmaster heard about the accident, so he
called the teacher of PE. The teacher came quickly to the office of the
headmaster. The headmaster said: Muhammad is sick, you must go
immediately to the clinic to take care of him and call Dr. Shareef to
check him and give him the necessary medicine and if the medicine is
not available at the clinic, send the attendant or a student to buy it
from the pharmacy. You must stay with Muhammad until he gets up.
Oh teacher, don’t forget that Muhammad is a good player and he is

Page 19 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
also a diligent student. Above all, it’s our responsibility right now. We
shouldn’t neglect our duty. The headmaster called Hamed and told
him: You should go to the house of Muhammad and tell his parents
and others in his house to come to the school to take him home and
look after him.

After all, the headmaster asked for Ahmad and he told him: I knew
that you, Hamed and Muhammad are close friends. Tell me how did
he fell down? Is he sick?

Ahamad replied: Sir, it seems like that as he didn’t eat anything at the
break. We went to the playing field and we were playing football with
other students but he didn’t join us, he stood aside watching the
game. You know Sir, today it is very hot and maybe the heat affected
him. At that time, the PE teacher arrived and he said: Sir, Muhammad
has woken up and he is fine. His condition is not serious. The
headmaster said: Alhamdulillah (Thanks God) and he advised all
students not to play in the sun so that the heat would not hurt them.
He added: You should drink plenty of water these days. And he told
Muhammad: You should have rest for a day or two and you should
eat well. At that time the family members of Muhammad arrived and
Muhammad and the headmaster assured them that he is in good
health.

India is a vast country and it is called the Indian Subcontinent. It is

located in the southern east part of the Asia continent.

Its shape is like an island as it is surrounded by water from three

sides, the Arabian Sea in the west, the Indian Ocean in the south and
the Bay of Bengal in the east. In the northern part of India, there is a
mountain range called the Himalaya covered with snow throughout
the year.

India is divided into a number of states for administrative purposes

and they are under the leadership of the Central Government in New
Delhi, the capital of India.

In India, there are Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and

Christians. Similarly, there are also different languages. The Hindus
are the majority in the country. They worship idols, trees, the sun, the
moon, stars and others.

Muslims are the largest minority. They are monotheists, they worship
Allah, the only one (Al-Ahad) and they do not worship any other
thing, person, sun, moon or prophet.

India has a democratic system and it is considered the largest

democracy in the world.

Indians vote for the Members of Parliament in elections to form the

Central Government. Indeed, elections for local governments take
place in the states.

Page 22 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
We all Indians respect people as well as the various religions. We have
the freedom to choose any religion.

Hindus build temples for idols, Muslims build mosques, Christians

build churches and Sikhs build their temples calling them Gurudwara.
All of them worship their God according to their rituals, and religious
ceremonies without fear or risk.

India is mainly an agricultural country. However, there are also many

industries as well a number of Indians practice liberal
professions/freelance.

Indians like security and peace and we hope that our neighbors like
security and peace as well.

Nabil is a senior employee at a private office in New Delhi. He has

received letters from his relatives and friends in Chennai calling him

Page 24 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
for a visit so that he could spend the last days of Ramadan and the Eid
with them. He took this matter up with his wife and two children to
set the time of travel without affecting the study of the children.

After fixing the date of travel, Nabil took a leave for two weeks. One
day in the morning, Nabil went to the railway station in New Delhi to
book tickets. The reservation hall was crowded with people; men,
women, boys and girls. He saw many people standing in long queues
in front of the reservation counters. Some of them were sitting on the
iron benches and others were waiting for their turn in the queues. The
queues were moving slowly. Nabil also stood in a queue and to pass
the time he started talking with others. He said: it seems that the
employee on our counter is slow. He takes long time dealing with one
customer. A person standing in the same queue replied: I agree with
you, he is lazy. Another person broke into the conversation saying
that: Not only him, all of them are lazy. But this employee is very lazy
(first-class idle). Look, he is talking a lot with the female worker on the
next counter. Another person said: he could be a new employee, but
in general employees in the governmental offices are like that
because they have established job. They don’t fear their managers
and heads. The queue kept moving slowly until the turn of Nabil
came. Nabil gave the employee the application form of the
reservation and the money and he said: Sir, please give me four
tickets to Chennai in the second class. The employee input the
necessary data into the computer and gave the tickets to Nabil. Nabil
took the tickets and thanked him.

On the day of the travel, Nabil and his family members arrived at the
railway station about an hour earlier than the scheduled time of the
train’s departure. The station’s platform was crowded with travelers

Page 25 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
males and females, old and young. Some travelers were sitting on the
iron benches while others were sitting on the ground. Many of them
kept walking back and forth on the platform waiting for the train.
Some were drinking tea, coffee or beverages. Some were sitting in
groups chatting with each other and some were criticizing the system.
The train going to Chennai arrived so Nabil let his family in along with
other travelers and he also got in. The train departed from New Delhi
station at the scheduled time.

Lesson 19

Hamed travels to his college

Hamed is a student at the engineering college. He came home for his

vacation and he spent two weeks with his parents and brothers. The
weeks passed quickly, so Hamed prepared his luggage to return to his
college. He had to travel alone to his college by train.

On the day of travelling, his mother advised him saying that: My son,
you are travelling alone and you have to consider some matters. First
of all, do not accompany anyone and don’t accept anything from any
stranger. Don’t eat except the food of the train’s restaurant and don’t
drink water except that you have with you or that you buy from a
reliable shop. When you get off the train, don’t go with anyone
offering you a ride as you should hire a taxi from the parking lot inside
the train station. You should immediately call us as soon as you reach
the accommodation as well.

Hamed said: Mom, in your advice you taught me both light and heavy
noon of emphasis of the present tense. Mom, the teacher taught us
this topic in the last lessons in which we read in front of him before
the break. Our teacher knows Arabic and its grammar well as he

Page 27 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
cites/gives examples from the holy verses and the old Arabic poetry.
He has read different verses and various poems relating to this topic.
I’ll mention a verse in which the two noons are found together. Allah
says in Surat Yusuf, Bismillah Alrahman Alraheem (In the name of
Allah the most Compassionate, the most Merciful)

‫اولَيَكونًاام َن االصااغر َا‬

“‫ين‬ َ ‫“ = ” َولَئنالم ايَف َعل ا َمااآمره الَيس َجنَن‬If he will not do what I
order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased”

I also remember a verse for Hatim Alta’e:

"‫ إذاانالاممااكانتاتجمعامغنما‬...‫"قليلًابهاماايحمدنكاوارثا‬

(The heir rarely praises you (the deceased person) after getting what
you’ve been collecting without effort.) ie: most inheritors except a
few will never praise you, even when you left a vast fortune for them

Mom said: Ma sha’ Allah, Ma sha’ Allah (Great!), it’s time for your
train. Have a good trip, rely on Allah (off you go).

Lesson 20

Shakeel opens a saving account

There is a bank in our neighborhood. In India, banks are either owned

by the Central Government or the States’ Governments. There are
banks everywhere even in the villages and the countryside. We all
benefit from banks regardless of our jobs and careers; Manufacturers
in the cities in addition to farmers in the villages and countryside.
Banks serve their clients in various ways such as saving accounts,
current accounts, fixed account. They also offer financial aids and

Page 28 of 29 ashraf.ali@brightriders.ae/2019-20
loans for farmers and for those working in the heavy and light
industries for lowest interest rate. Accordingly, banks play a
constructive role in the country’s development.

One day, my parents told me about the benefits of saving money and
they took me to the bank to open an account for me so that I will get
used to saving some of the money I take from my parents from time
to time and monthly. We went to the bank and directly entered the
room of the bank’s manager as he is a friend of my parents since they
were students at the college of Zakir Hussain. Bashir Ahmad, the
manager, was glad to see us and he greeted us. We sat in front of him
and my father told him: I came today to open a saving account to my
son, Shakeel. The manager said: Welcome, then open an account but
he looks a minor/under-age. It’s better for him to open a fixed
account, so he deposits a specific amount of money every month for
three years. Three years later, he will attain the age of majority and
he will be able to withdraw the saved money with interest. Indeed he
can open a saving account if he wants.

Shakeel’s parents agreed, then the manager rang the bell and the
attendant came in. The manager told him to call Muhammad and to
ask him to bring a fixed account opening form with him. The
attendant said: Yes, Sir. Few minutes later, Muhammad arrived and
he filled the form. Shakeel signed as the account holder and his father
signed as a witness. The father thanked the manager and they went
home. Mr.Ashraf Ali . MA .BEd. SET. NET.JRF
