Sleepers

The document discusses the need for concrete sleepers in Indian Railways, detailing their historical experimentation, functions, requirements, advantages, and disadvantages. It outlines various types of concrete sleepers, including mono-block and twin-block designs, and emphasizes the benefits of prestressed concrete (PSC) for durability and efficiency. Additionally, it lists different specifications and drawings for various sleeper types used in different railway applications.

NEED OF SLEEPERS
BACKGROUND
BACKGROUND
BACKGROUND
EXPERIMENTATION IN
CONCRETE SLEEPERS
 Experimentation in Concrete sleepers
 French Railways - 1903
 Swiss Railways - 1904
 German Railways - 1922
 Indian Railway’s Earlier trials remained unsatisfactory
 By importing and Subsequently by casting locally - 1912

 Major step to introduce Concrete Sleepers on IR

 Successful designs and trials in 1967-68
 Manufacturing and laying from 1969
 First laying in Karari yard (Jhansi-Gwalior Section) on CR
FUNCTIONS OF SLEEPERS

 Load Distribution
 Holding of Track Gauge
 Resistance to movement of track
 Longitudinal & lateral
 Enable maintenance of line and level
REQUIREMENTS OF SLEEPERS
 Hold Track Geometry
 Gauge, Alignment, Level etc.
 Fitness for modern track structure (LWR/CWR)
 Higher weight to lend stability
 Longer retentivity to packing
 Maintenance by modern methods (On-Track Machines)
 Absorb Damp vibrations
 Easy to Manufacture/Transport/Laying
 Ability to withstand damages during accidents
 Less number of components
 Electrically insulated
 Long life & economical etc.
ADVANTAGES OF
CONCRETE SLEEPERS
 Freedom of design and construction
 Long service life & durability
 Maintains good track geometry for better Safety
 With elastic fastening system
 Higher weight for
 Good longitudinal & lateral resistance
 Better longitudinal & lateral stability for LWR
 Anti theft & Anti-sabotage
 Flat bottom – suitable for mechanized maintenance
 Well-suited for track circuiting areas
 Simple to manufacture, Cost effective; etc.
DISADVANTAGES OF
CONCRETE SLEEPERS
 Less elastic then wood
 Dynamic loads up-to 25 % higher
 Manufacture/Transport/Laying & maintenance
 Requires superior technology
 Heavy initial investment to set-up plant
 Not suitable for manual laying or maintenance
 Not universal – (different type of sleepers needed)
 Difficult to dispose
 Little scrap value etc.
TYPES OF CONCRETE SLEEPERS

Twin-block sleeper

 Well defined bearing

surface, and High lateral
resistance etc.

 Handling and maintenance

is very difficult
TYPES OF CONCRETE SLEEPERS

Mono-block sleeper

 Enables rigid track frame

 Prevents buckling, and

higher resistance for
longitudinal movement

 Can be pre-stressed

 Economical
WHY PSC USED FOR SLEEPERS ?

 Concrete unable to withstand tensile stresses

 RCC not suitable for heavy dynamic loads

 Larger section requirement

 PSC enables considerably smaller sizes of sections

 Pre-stressing force applied centrally
