ICT1
ICT1
with a foundational understanding of how technology shapes the modern world. As first-year
students in BIS1 and BIT1, this course was our initial exposure to core ICT concepts, tools, and
practical applications. Through lectures, hands-on sessions, and group activities, we explored
topics such as computer hardware and software, internet usage, data management, and basic
troubleshooting techniques. This reflection aims to share our collective experiences, challenges,
and insights gained throughout the course, highlight
ting how it has influenced our academic journey and future career outlook in the ICT field.
Lloyd---In my first year, first semester, one of the big problems we faced in the ICT module was
lack of availability of up-to-date software. Most of us students came to realize that some of the
concepts we learnt (especially Microsoft Office packages), our outdated application versions
could sometimes fail to accomplish certain modern tasks. Secondly, the other application
software that turned out to be a shareware (copyrighted software with a trial period) type
software. This meant we couldn’t get exposed to all the features the software could offer.
These two challenges affected our learning experience as students. Firstly, some students were
forced to work with outdated graphic user interfaces (GUI), which sometimes brought about
confusion as the lessons were being delivered by the lecturer. This would later turn out to be a
much bigger problem in the case where an internship program opened up in the future and we
end up coming face to face with newer and more advanced application interfaces. Another issue
came about when using shareware where we experienced restricted functionality. These were the
kind of features and tools that maximize productivity and allow for more complex creations.
Vitu--- as a group of BIS1 and BIT1, our journey through the introduction of ict had been both
enriching and transformative. Through assignments and group discussions, we have gained a
solid foundation and appreciation for the role of ict in both our academic and professional life.
One of the most impactful aspects of the course was learning about the evolution and
significance of ict in our Morden society, understanding how technology has shaped business
operations by increasing efficiency as files are easy to access, facilitates online transactions and
expands market reach through websites and mobile apps, helps in decision making for instance in
management information systems where the system provides decision makers with regular,
routines, and timely information that is used in making decisions by providing tools like data
analytics and business intelligence software. It has also played a role in enhancing internal and
external communication through emails, video conferencing, and collaboration tools. It also
supports digital marketing through websites, social media, email campaigns, and customer
relationship management systems
Richard-- One thing I’ve experienced while learning Introduction to ICT is that it has helped me
understand other modules better. For example, in Algebra, we use ICT tools like calculators and
Excel to solve equations and draw graphs, which makes things much easier. In Economics, ICT
helps us to organize data in tables and create charts so we can understand topics like demand and
supply more clearly. When it comes to Networking, the basics we learned in ICT, like how
computers work and connect, make it easier to follow what we’re being taught. Programming
also became less confusing because we already knew how to use computers and basic software,
so starting to write code wasn’t too scary. Even in English for Academic Purposes, ICT helps us
type and format assignments properly, check our grammar, and research information online. So
overall, learning ICT has really supported me in many other subjects by making things clearer
and saving time.
Jessica-- One thing I really truly enjoyed learning was cybersecurity, in the period we learnt this
it was beyond exhilarating it was as though a new world was opened up to us. Even though a lot
was taught there were still a few particular things that stood out for us like the types of cyber
threats for example phishing, theft and so much more, the numerous ways of identifying some of
these security threats and how best to protect our information from falling into the wrong hands
for example black hat hackers
As exhilarating as I might have been it became even more disheartening when we learnt that a
large number people are victims of these so called black hat hackers, we later realised it was
mostly to two particular reasons why cybercrimes are very common despite that technology is
rapidly expanding people are still illiterate and oblivious to the harms that could come to them
on the internet and when, where and who to share their personal information with and some
conniving people take advantage of this fact and trick people into sharing their personal data for
their own selfish personal gains.
With the knowledge we have gained from our ICT class in cybersecurity we believe the best way
to mitigate these threats is to educate people on the dangers of over sharing on the internet, how
best to protect their dives from possible threats either physical or technical for example like
using stronger passwords, burglar proofing a room, advocating for data privacy and law for
enforcement towards cybercriminals—
Justin-- To begin with, ICT has brought deep understanding on the quality features of right
computer. A powerful Central Processing Unit (CPU) makes the computer to handle multiple
tasks at a time. {UPGRADINGAND REPAIRING PCs. Mueller(2023). The CPU is considered
as a brain of computer since it process any input as data to produce result as output of any type.
Multiple cores inside the CPU increases clock speed of computer hence enabling it to run many
operations at once. It is possible to play music while playing games or using other applications
like Microsoft Word and Excel. This is understandable now after learning and studying ICT that
speed and efficient performance of computer is affected by CPU.
There are other components of CPU that help computer to run programmes smoothly called
buses. These are electronic paths used to transfer data from one point to another inside the unit
(UNDERSTANDING COMPUTERS TO DAY AND TOMORROW). This component aid
performance of computer because its width determines the amount of data transferred at a time.
Fast and efficient computers are mostly used in organizations companies and individuals to solve
complex problems. In business sector they prefer these type of computers to accomplish their
work intime. For example in big shops they use computers of high speed to serve their customers
intime while students in schools rush for the same computers to do their research and improve
coding skills in programming. The other features of good computer are RAM and ports on
computer. RAM stores data to be processed by the CPU. if the RAM is small, it reduces
performance computer because just holds small data.
ICT has taught that if we fast computer should choose one with good RAM. We did not new that
computers need other devices to feed data. With ICT knowledge, now we are able to use
connection ports to exchange data between computer with external sources. We have enjoyed
since now we are able to connect our pc to internet.
Last but not least, we were also affected in terms of assignments and examinations. When the
lecturer would give us an assignment, some of the students could sometimes fail to submit their
work in time because lack of efficiency with the outdated applications they were using. This
would force some students to search online for other free software alternatives and therefore
there was inequality among the students.
